Stupid signing. Werth had to take that. He must be laughing.

not sure about the value of this pick up... small market teams need to get prospects not guys that are equal or worth less than their contract

Yup! Werth will not carry the team at all. Bryce Harper will.

I think he will have trouble producing power numbers in a much bigger ballpark without Rollins/Utely/Howard protecting his @ss...
But I have no problem with him getting all the money he can. Its not like he went in with a ski mask on and a snub nosed .45 in his hand and robbed the Nats. The Nats decided it made a good business deal for them. Now, I don't happen to agree...but don't blame Werth (or his agent Boras). Washington could have told him to go pound sand...but they didn't.

Amazing to think that Jayson freakin' Werth is damn near a $20 million per year player. How soon will it be before the Nats are trying to deal his bloated over-priced butt?

I'm not sure about 'worst deal ever,' but it really doesn't make sense to give this guy that long of a contract. Reminds me of the Carlos Lee deal with the Astros; Lee hasn't been a bust, but at the same time Houston would love to have his $18+ million each of the next two seasons off its books right now.

Werth should have gotten about 5 year deal for 80 mil maybe, even that is quite generous imo.

I was thinking more along the lines of the 4-year, $56 million that Dunn got with the ChiSox. Werth is certainly a better defensive player than Dunn, but Dunn beats Werth with the bat (not literally, of course). Dun is also about six months younger than Werth who will be 38 at the end of the deal when he's drawing the highest annual salary on the contract.

Werth is a very good player (27 HRs, 46 doubles) and is an excellent fielder that can play all 3 outfiled positions but is certainly not one of the top players in the game. When you hire Boras you are pretty much saying - I could care less where I play just get me the most $$$$. Boras probably had Washington bidding against nobody as no other team was going to pay him anywhere near that kind of money. Think the Phillies were offering about 3 years 40 mil. Cant blame Werth though.

Werth will probably get injured before his contract expires or get injured for a whole season like Carlos Beltran and Mo Vaughn did. Or just suck like Adrian Beltre did with his contract while in Seattle.

By the way, is Zimmerman the only guy the Nats have to give Werth some protection?

    Terrible signing.
Same money could have landed them Cliff Lee, which still may not be worth it but would have been made the team much more revelant.
Or use less money and retain Dunn, this signing makes no sense at all and is worse for baseball than anything the Yankees are doing!

vernon Wells had won gold gloves and hit 100 or more RBI several times when he signed his deal. Werth at 31 has never even hit 100 RBI in his carrer

I think when you are a bad or rebuilding team, you have to overpay sometimes... I mean, do you think an A list free agent would even want to go to Washington? Mark Texiera had a chance but I doubt he'd be super happy to be a Nat or an O... you have to start rebuilding somewhere.

Washington is excited about the new ball park and they need some guys in there that can play. Roger Bernaedno isn't the answer.... Yes, they overpaid... by a lot, but when your team sucks that bad you sort of have to... that's the sad part.

Dunn is done in DC, signed a 4-year deal with the ChiSox as noted earlier in this thread. Nationals Park isn't going to be as hitter-friendly for Werth as CBP in Philly. Washington overpaid for him, it's that simple. Boras must have photos of the Nats owners getting it on with farm animals, there's no other way to figure why they continuously kowtow to his clients.
