Does Chipper have legit shot at .400?

I think he does, after 20 games it was to early, after 40 it is still to early we are now 50 games deep on the season and only 30 games away from the allstar break and he is showing no signs of slumping. I think he will be right around the .415 mark for the allstar game and I believe he has a legitamet shot at it. What does everyone think?

being a Braves fan, i hope he gets it. It just seems every time a player hovers around that .400 mark, they just come up short by the end of the year.

I know you are absolutely right. As to RyanXL's dumb comment beneath you. Ryan if you would like to make side bet I will give you 2to 1 odds on any amount of money that you would like to put on the wager that he doesn't hit .350.

what is chippers career average? do you think he is going to hit 50-100 pts above his average?

That I do, apparently you don't do you remember a guy named Barry Bonds who never really hit more then 40 homeruns in his life then he hit more then 70, I know it was steroid assisted but its called a good year people have them sometimes. Don't know if you remember a guy named Paul Molitor but he was .306 lifetime his worst here was like .216 and his best was .353. Wow look at the difference between his high his low and his average. His average is just that an average it doesn't mean that he can not out perform it one year and not for another. If you are so sure that Chipper wont hit .350 for the year, I told you I am willing to give you 2 to 1 odds. Risk 1000 against my 2000. That is great deal for you. I know a site where we can create our own bet just let me know.

I know you don't know me thats why I said I have site that will book the bet for us. I used to work for a fantasy sports company that is fantasy sports except its on daily basis not a seasonal. So its set up like pokerroom there are 10 seats 5 seats or however many for that contest you go sit down. Draft a team for that night then whos ever team does best collects the pot. Anyway I'm still good friends with everyone overthere and they set up private contest for me sometimes. Just let me know, I don't know what his final average will be, in my heart and the conspiracy theorist in me says it will be .403 because I would love to see him do it and with the whole steroid scandal if a guy who wasn't on steriods bats .400 it will be good for the game. My brain says he will fall short though because pitchers will pitch around him in the 2nd half of the year so I think he will bat around .367

there is a lot of hitters that come to mind who came close and also as strictlywinners pointed out about players having career years and bad years. remember Maris, the guy who broke the Babe's single season HR record, dude never hit over 40 in a year but in 61' he hit 61, yes pitchers had to throw to him, cause the Yanks were loaded, they couldn't pitch around him and look for the next guy.
some guys i remember having a shot at .400 then coming up short
    Puckett .356 in 88'
    Gwynn .394 in 94' and .370 in 87'
    Helton .372 in 00'
    and Boggs a career .328 hitter had .366 in 88', .363 in 87', and .361 in 83', but also had a bad year in 92' at .259

Oh really I can name a bunch more that had shot on top of louiville. Do you remember a guy by the name of John Olerud, he came close twice and his career average was barely over .300.

I don't think he's going to do it. I see him ending at somewhere around .360 at best. Of coarse he has a shot, but he will eventually go into a big slump that will kill his average.

I'm not going to say there is no chance, but I don't see it happening.

not a prayer in the world

agree with 355/360 range , maybe 350 at the all star break , which is great !

If I recall, Teddy ballgame was the last to hit over .400. And please correct me if I am wrong, but when he hit that mark, walks were totaled into batting average, not into on base percentage. There lies Chippers downfall. I say .340, which is a hell of a year, considering he hacks from both sides. The dog days of summer will get to him.
