Philadelphia @ Cincinnati
Mike Leake (5-1, 2.92 ERA)
Joe Blanton (3-5, 6.53 ERA)
Blanton comes in with wins in back-to-back starts, and he’s coming off of his best start of the season (7.2 IP, six hits, three runs, eight strikeouts, no walks vs. Cleveland in a 12-3 win last Thursday), but he’s 0-3 with an 11.32 in his last three road starts.
Philadelphia is 5-9 this season after losing the previous game by 4+ runs.
Leake has struggled in his last two home starts, allowing five runs in each one, but he’s 3-1 with a 3.67 ERA in nine home starts this season.
The Reds are 6-3 in Leake’s home starts,& six wins in their last seven games.
What it comes down to is that it isn’t a good matchup for Blanton in the least, considering that he hasn‘t done well this season against teams who can hit like Cincinnati can. Look at what happened in his starts at Boston (league leader in runs, 2nd in homers, 2nd in team batting average) – 4 IP, 13 hits, nine runs, two homers allowed – and at Milwaukee (4th in homers) – three homers, five runs allowed in 7 IP.
Leake might take some knocks too, but in this matchup, I’ve got to favor the home team, who hit Kyle Kendrick hard last night and should do the same to Blanton.... Was liking the over 9.5 in this game, but playing the side instead....

Tampa Bay @ Boston
John Lackey (8-3, 4.69 ERA)
James Shields (6-7, 4.55 ERA)
Lackey is 4-0 in his last six starts. Lackey is 5-1 in eight home starts.
The Red Sox are 6-0 in Lackey’s last six home starts. The Red Sox were 10-10 in their first six home series. In their last seven home series, they’re 16-5The Red Sox have won six in a row at home. They’re also 8-1 in their last nine home games and 12-2 in their last 14 home games.
The Red Sox are 17-8 in June, and that includes a current run of nine wins in their last 12 games and 11 wins in their last 15 games.
Shields is 0-6 with a 7.20 ERA in his last six starts. That streak started with a 2-0 home loss to Boston in which Shields pitched well but was saddled with a tough luck loss.
He hasn’t pitched nearly that well over his last five starts. In those five starts, he’s allowed 41 hits, 30 runs (27 earned – 8.61 ERA), and seven homers in only 28.2 IP.
Overall, the Rays are slumping. Tampa Bay has lost five of seven, eight of 11, and 11 of 16.
The Rays have lost their last three road series, and they’re 3-6 in the nine games in those series. They still have the league’s best road record at 24-12, but it doesn’t carry as much weight as it did just a few weeks ago.
The Rays have scored only 17 runs in their last seven games, and they’ve been held to two runs or less eight times in their last 16 games.
