I think it depends on who is on the ballot with him the first time. They cant let everyone in

Yes - and according to Bill James also yes -

James has two HoF methods - one being HoF standards which bases on whether a players performance warrants HoF - ~50 is average HoFers, Jones scores 65 ( the only HoF eligible people on the list over 40 are Roberto Alomar and Larry Walker)

His other Method - HoF monitor measures the likelihood of making based on voting trends based on a players performance, 100 is a likely HoFer 130 is a shoo-in, Jones Rates 165, only Alomar, Palmero and McGuire are eligible for the Hof with score higher than 150.

Not a 1st-timer, if Ted Simmons is not in the HOF, Chipper shouldn't be

how many hitters with anywhere near Chipper's amount of AB's that hit over .300 for their career are NOT in the HOF?

Yes, but not a first ballot by any means. He'll probably get in before any of the juicers.

why not; is there something that happens between the 1st and 2nd year of HoF eligibility that makes a player more worthy of induction ? either you belong in the HoF or not - why would a person change thier opinion on a player ?

If he gets in he should really thank the Mets. He has destroyed them his whole career.

Couldn't be more wrong. Chipper is actually one of the toughest ever. Most other guys would not be out there limping around. He can barely run the bases sometimes but he is out there. Most would not do that.

And he is a lock first ballot hall of famer.

I agree that it's dumb, but that happens all the time. It's the committee's way of saying that the player deserves to be in the hall of fame but isn't among the most elite caliber in the hall.

This shouldn't be a question. Best 3B in the history of the game. He has a ring, 4 trips to World Series, an MVP, a batting title, 3000 hits and never was juiced.

don't really understand this argument, career .300 hitter, 400+ home runs, WS ring, and an MVP. guy is a sure fire HOFer, don't really care if its first ballot or not.

I agree he is HOF'er also, but Chipper won't sniff 3K hits in his lifetime.

I can't help but agree with that as well. Chipper had an awesome 8-10 yr run were he was one of the top 5-10 players in the game at one time. That being said I don't even want to start naming the more accomplished 3B over there career's.

Chipper had a good career and he is not linked to any steriods. For that I respect his work. I watched him and followed him from early in his career and remember the hype when he was in the Minors. His body size never changed significantly over nite like so many of the stars of there time. He got a little bigger and filled out as a man, but he never appeared to be a body builider playing baseball.

This reminds me of when they asked John Lennon if Ringo Starr was the best drummer of all time . He responded " I'm not sure he is the best drummer in the Beatles".

Same thing here. Great player but ..not the best of all time and not the best in Atlanta.

    Eddie Mathews .271ba, 512 hr's, 1453 rbi's, 9time all star ,2 world championships.

And please understand the era before you compare stats.

    Hall of Fame? Yes.

As good as Eddie Mathews? No.

    In my opinion, of course.

HOF voting will be very complicated as this decade comes to a close..... writers will hold grudges against alot of known and suspected PED users.... there are also tons of guys that will become eligible that have great stats... but i'm thinking the "automatic" numbers will be changing for hitters, to make it harder to get in.... and the #'s will have to be lowered for pitchers to get in....

like I said earlier, writers are a weird bunch.... alot of them will never vote anyone in the first year of eligibility regardless.... some of them think because Babe Ruth didn't get in unanimously they figure No ONE should get a vote their first year

His single in the fifth was his 2,715 career hit and tied him with Bill Buckner for 60th all-time.

    00 HE HIT 36

Chipper one of the all time greats. Guy produced at the most critical times again and again in his career. Absolutely deserved to get in first ballot.

Chipper one of my all time faves. Couldn’t be happier for the guy.
