Angels' Matthews out at least 5 games with sprained ankle
BALTIMORE -- Los Angeles Angels center fielder Gary Matthews Jr. will be sidelined for at least five games after spraining his ankle in Tuesday night's 10-5 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.
X-rays were negative, and a team spokesman said Matthews will be sidelined for the remainder of the road trip, which includes two more games in Baltimore and a three-game series against the Chicago White Sox.
With two outs in the top of the third inning, Matthews hurt his right ankle when he slid into second base on a ground ball to shortstop. Miguel Tejada threw to first -- not second -- on the play. Matthews left the game.
Matthews is batting .257 with 18 homers and 17 stolen bases.
