Saturday's Front Page Picks (Sep 8)

Indians, Angels Over 9½ in Anaheim

    Game Time: 09/08/2007 09:05 PM -
    By: Al McMordie | bigal.com

CC Sabathia gives the Indians a pitching advantage over the Angels' Ervin Santana. But both hurlers are known for getting great run support, so play the Over tonight in Anaheim.

Our Saturday night MLB selection is on the Cleveland Indians and Los Angeles Angels scoring Over the total in Anaheim.

Indians left-hander C.C. Sabathia is right in the thick of the Cy Young race in the American League. For Sabathia, the thought of that award is probably nice, but what he would really like to do is lead his team to a division pennant. And Sabathia and the Tribe are well on their way as they have extended their lead in the AL Central division to 5½ games over the Tigers.

Sabathia is a big reason for Cleveland's surprising success in 2007. He has 16 wins, a 3.24 ERA, and because he is a big, strong, workhorse of an athlete, Sabathia just seems to get stronger and stronger as the season gets longer and that is exactly what you want from your #1 starter as you head towards the playoffs.

The Angels are the second best hitting team in baseball (behind the Yankees) and they will need to get their guns out against Sabathia. They hit left-handers very well (.298 team BA) and they will need some production tonight as right-hander Ervin Santana goes to the mound. Let's just say he's been the opposite of Sabathia this season. Despite some very ugly numbers, including an ERA over six runs, the Angels are almost .500 in Santana's starts this season and that is because they average over seven runs scored when he pitches.

Sabathia also gets very good run support when he needs it, which hasn't been that often but he may just need it tonight. Take the Over.

    Free Pick: Indians-Angels Over 9½

NY Yankees, KC Royals Under 9½

    Game Time: 09/08/2007 07:10 PM -
    By: Ben Burns | sportspic.com

A couple of pitchers who trend to the Under meet in Kansas City tonight when the Yankees' Andy Pettitte and Brian Bannister of the Royals match up. Play the Under in this battle.

New York southpaw Andy Pettitte has a 3.32 ERA in 15 road starts, seeing the Under go 9-6. Not to be outdone, Kansas City's Brian Bannister has a 3.22 ERA at home, seeing the Under go 6-1-3.

For the season, the Under is a profitable 13-5-5 in Bannister's 23 starts. It's also worth noting that the Royals have seen the Under go 10-3-2 this season when listed as home underdogs in the +125 to +150 range. Consider a play on the Under when the Yankees meet the Royals at Kauffman Stadium on Saturday night.

    Free Pick: Yankees-Royals Under 9½

    Mariners +130 at Detroit Tigers

    Game Time: 09/08/2007 07:05 PM -
By: LT Profits Sports Group | who2beton.com

The Mariners are hitting .300 as a team vs. left-handers this season, which does not bode well for the struggling southpaw Nate Robertson. Take Seattle as a nice underdog.

The Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners are heading in opposite directions, but we actually feel that the underdog Mariners have the edge in this contest.

Nate Robertson has had a disappointing season at 7-11 with a 4.95 ERA and 1.51 WHIP, and things do not figure to get better for the southpaw vs. a Seattle lineup that simply tears up left-handers. The Mariners are batting an amazing .300 as a team vs. southpaws for the entire season, as well as a whopping .322 against them over the last 10 games! Roberson already experienced this lefty dominance in his first start vs. the Mariners this season, as he was pummeled for six earned runs and 10 hits while lasting just 4.2 innings here at home back in May.

Now Jeff Weaver is oft-maligned, and he has indeed been very inconsistent this year. However, he may be catching the Tigers at the perfect time, as Detroit has struggled to score runs lately. Before busting out for six runs last night, the Tigers has scored a grand total of six runs during a three-game series vs. a Chicago White Sox team that is not renowned for its pitching.

Finally, should both starting pitchers be knocked out, the Mariners have the far superior bullpen, making them even more attractive at this price.

    Free Pick: Mariners +130

Back Blue Jays -150 at Devil Rays

    Game Time: 09/08/2007 07:10 PM -
By: Jimmy the Moose | sportspic.com

Toronto has everything on their side in this game, especially on the mound with A.J. Burnett chunking tonight. Back the Blue Jays on the road in Tampa against the Devil Rays.

Tonight the Blue Jays are in Tampa with one of their hotter pitchers of late going.

Toronto is 5-1 in their last six games as a favorite and has won four of A.J. Burnett's last five starts. In his last five starts as a favorite, the Jays are also 4-1. Burnett's ERA over his last three starts is 2.14 while Tampa Bay's Jason Hammel has an ERA of 7.71. The Devil Rays are 3-6 when he's on the mound.

Tampa is 16-37 in their 52 games as a dog. In their last 26 games as a home dog the D-Rays are 8-18. Play on the Blue Jays.

    Free Pick: Blue Jays -150
