TB Rays starter ace Blake Snell will not play for a cut in pay

The Rays ace is scheduled to make $7 million this season, but here is how he sees it:

"If I'm gonna play, I should be getting the money I signed to be getting paid. I should not be getting half of what I'm getting paid because the season's cut in half, on top of a 33% cut of the half that's already there -- so I'm really getting, like, 25%. On top of of that, it's getting taxed. So, imagine how much I'm actually making to play, you know what I'm saying?"

Yet here in Florida where I’m at kids baseball and softball practices are allowed to start back tomorrow, with league play to follow in a week. It’s sad when 5 year olds will show up to practice and play for the fun of it yet a guy making 7 million a year isn’t willing to play, along with all the nba and nhl guys who also can’t bring themselves to leave the house

You'd think there would be something in MLB contracts that would cover something like this.

But the CBA gives them literally everything. Prime example is David price when asked about his feelings regarding the pitch clock, he said something to the likes of "I don't care, I'll just take even longer then."

Many of them need to grow up and, lots of little boys in that league and it shows attitude and action wise.

It’s odd SBR’s working class always sides with the owners in these situations.

They will be cutting it more than just half. I understand snells POV (not porn). The owners are being very stingy trying to get an agreement on a revenue split yet they refuse to open their books and show what they are making. The injury risk is very high in a shortened season with a fake/ rushed spring training. Snell comes across as an ahole but if I were him I’d tell them to kick them to kick rocks also. He’s fresh off a fat 5 year 50+ million deal. Blame the owners not the players guys...

They paid you for a 162 game season. If there’s only 80 played, why should you get the same salary? The team certainly isn’t making the same amount by having fewer games. Why would the employees get paid full for working part time?

What really kills me are these bums that pose at home plate and stretch a triple into a single. In the 50's and 60's they would have got their ass whupped in the clubhouse.

It’s fine. What the players don’t realize is attendance will be nil this year and who knows the following years. People are not just going to flock back to a baseball stadium even if the government say you are allowed to. Baseball games are boring to go to and people will do a cost-benefit analysis and will decide to watch it from home is safer, better and cost less.

Actually they pay you to compete and win a championship. If they pay you only half the money to compete then why would you give 100% effort and not 50% effort? Owners don't realize that paying half the salary will force players to not play through injuries or give full effort which will lower the game quality.

Cry me a fukkin river. Wah wah I only get paid 3.5 million to play half a season of a fukkin kid's game instead of 7 million to play a full 162 of the same kid's game. Wahhhhh woe is fukkin me. And Snell is a pitcher, literally working 1/5 of the time as everyday players lol...he will clock into work 16 times roughly during this proposed half season. A half season where he will take home multiple millions of dollars.

How many of them play through injuries and give 100% effort while receiving their FULL salary anyways? Not many.

Tell that to Prince Fielder who retired halfway through the 2016 season & still got paid his full $96 million he was due from 2017-2020 because he signed a GUARANTEED contract. As much as a wannabe Andrew Schultz sounding wigger Snell comes across as I can't really blame him for his stance. Unless he gets suspended for PEDs or domestic violence, etc. since this ain't the NFL he deserves every red cent he signed for unforeseen circumstances be damned.

Snell acting like a true “elitist” the players think they are entitled to the disgusting money they are paid. Real shame salaries in pro sports got out of hand to begin with, proves that players like snell don’t care about winning. Just care about being paid

I have totally lost all respect for Blake Snell.
This screams of an immature child saying "I want all my pay for doing half my workload"

What's the matter Blake? Can't live on 3 and a half million this year instead of seven million?
Meanwhile cooks that make 18 bucks an hour are unemployed, ask them what they think of all this?

Oh by the way Blake, lose the attitude, two years ago you had one Cy Young Award season, the other three years you sucked.
Your'e a one trick pony pal, take away that 2018 season your'e a big time losing pitcher.

I don't wish harm on you pal, but I would not lose sleep if sometime in the near future a 100 mph line drive off of some sluggers bat would find it's way to your forehead and knock you into next Thursday.

Might be a good thing, knock some sense into your meatloaf for brains thick skull.

Based on this, the real problem is management, who want to pay players less than 50% of their salary, even if the season is 50% long. Owners want to reduce pay by 50% for playing only half a season, which the players agreed to. Now owners want to reduce pay even more (without even saying the exact amount) due to lost ticket sales from playing in empty stadiums, which Snell is speaking out against.
