Long term deals are bad for business

In football, because of the cap figure, the only position that matters is QB. Everyone else is worthless and can be cut end of each season. NFL players are used up after 5 years, so anyone thing they are going to get a great deal beyond that rookie contract better be a QB or expect to be cut 1 or 2 years into said contract because they bury their team

Holding out for $$$ in NFL is career suicide, the team and the shield come first
A-rod sells tickets - it’s more then just winning - of course 10 year contracts doesn’t favor the team - Harper is still young enough - I think it can work - he’s he number 1 draw in baseball- you can market him and sell tickets like trout - even if the team isn’t winning - now going 2 football - QB is the most important position- but you need a great O-line and d-line - you can not win without those components- it’s not a RB position- that isn’t value in today’s nfl

In 2014 philly signed a 25 year 5 billion dollar deal with Comcast SportsNet for the rights to televise their games. Last year they drew over 2 million fans with only a 93 mil payroll. In the 2 years prior they’ve drew 1.9 mil with a payroll less than 85 mil. Money in not a issue with this team.

And Harper would sell more tickets for 5-6 years

I’d be shocked. Think his agent took the meeting to put the screws on philly as they’ve been very vocal on signing one of the big 2

i don’t think we see the days of 3 mil in attendance anymore. But even getting to 2.5 mil is only 6-7k more fans a night.

You should know the way joe mauer contract turn out- a-rod wasn’t selling tickets? When he was juice up hitting all those homeruns ...

    OMG exactly!

I was soooo f'king pissed out that deal, and I actually played against Jake and Billy Mauer.

Joe never had that skillset, it was some hidden juice, anavar, caradine or something...one great year, in a contract year, then a decade of mediocre performance and Twins attendance didn't go up beyond the 1st 2 years of that new stadium.

Here's another question, did ARod improve or tarnish the Yankee image/ brand? Remember, he wrecked Texas w the contract, then NYY take it on, and in the end they're trying to void it for illegal HGH usage. Dud that make NYY better as a brand? No, of course not. Did NYY sell more tix in those years than the 95-02 years? No, of course not. Did they win more World Series? No, of course not.

These ling term deals hamstrung so many teams in the p a st that owners & gms are smart now.

Plus, w Harper... his .250 avg, 30 hrs, 90 rbi. Is that worth $30mm/ yr or could you platoon 2 guys (I'll just throw out 2 Twins, Jake Cave & Miguel Sano (he needs to go to RF because he is too fat for 3rd base) you'd get 26 hr, 35 2b, 90 rbi and all that for under $1.3mm) and use the savings to buy a killer bullpen that can touch the ball for 4 innings EVERY night!

    That's how you win

5 innings from starter, killer bullpen

Harper’s offer with the Nationals has officially expired. Cross them off the list.

Giants fan here. I hope we don't get him.

67 at bats at AT&T park.
Hitting .164, and only 2 homeruns during that time. Shit stats. No thanks.

Well Gents, that was fun while it lasted.

Now the Phillies are stuck with a deal that will flop in their faces.

From Philly and the word around here is they are set to up there offer to an amount no one would say no to. Plus him hitting in the Philles park must feel like hitting in a little league field.Plus with the trade they just made if he signs they will add anonther Starter gotta be the favorites out of the National League[/QUOTE]

All San Francisco did was make Harper a little more money. But the phillies have it wait for two years our 3 4 5 hitters are Harper trout and hoskins. Look out league
