dam, tried to make this a poll....how is it supposed to be created within one minute?? I previewed post as well.

    Choices were -

    1. YES - these umpires are too inconsistent

    2. NO - I like the traditional way with human involvement

    3. EITHER WAY - I'm fine with whatever the league decides to do

    4. DON'T FOLLOW BASEBALL / DON'T CARE - boring sport !

Wonder how many games the Braves would've won in the 90s with a computerized K-zone

Maddox, Glavine, Avery, etc... all getting the call a foot off the plate.

No can't take away the human element, and that would drastically change game. Players adjust or don't and that is what the human element adds.

We've taken away the human element with replays on fair/foul, homeruns, tag/no tag. Why not balls and strikes?

I agree, game was fine years ago but now with K-zone on almost all TV broadcasts its just points out how terrible the umps really are. Not their fault, they are humans not computers.

Do it and leave an ump behind home plate to act like he's making the call. They'll still need an ump there for plays at the plate anyway.

Certainly should be computerized. No need in this day and age for it not to be. National league should have DH as well.

It is always funny when you have a bet on the game, and watch the gamecast on MLB.com and something in the direct middle of the strikezone gets called a ball.

I wasn't a fan of getting review to begin with, but ya i suppose you're right a little, but with fair and fouls and home runs and tag or no tag, those are all after the fact/play calls and decisions and they can review, balls and strikes are immediate and called on the spot. That's the human element. The different strike zones, thus then the human ability to adjust to small or big strike zones or narrow or whatever. Having a computerized strike zone would change the way pitchers pitch and batters bat, you'd get use to either your specific strike zone or if they decide a standardized strike zone, and batters would be able to take advantage, pitchers would have to chuck it down the middle or be forced to nibble edges. As to where now, strike zones are arbitrary to the Umpire and there is a standard that has worked for 100+ years.

YES!!! Umps believe they have their own strike zone which is not only absurd but arrogant. There is a set strike zone and guys getting bad calls on balls and strikes can be eliminated so eliminate it. Keep a home plate umpire to signal the balls and strikes but get the Cyclops to handle the housekeeping.

Absolutely not! Umps having slightly different strike zones is just a part of the game......guys deal it, guys adjust. Sometimes the umpire will screw you on a shit strike 3 call, sometimes they'll miss one and leave you in the box. End of the day, it all evens out.

I think the umpires should get a censor when it is a ball a strike they can call it, like a ticker.

Then why have an umpire at all? We can have this discussion until the cows come home, but it will never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever happen. I promise each and every one of you!

I would agree to an extent. Why is there replay then? Either go full force and add a computerized zone, or dial it back and get rid of replay imo. Losing replay will also speed up the game, just what they want.

I bet there are some good home plate umps. Getting 98% calls correct.
They are probably the ones you never hear about, and just do the job.

The douche-bags who try and make the show about them should get a lifetime ban.
A batter who admires a home run for a split second gets chastised.
Why doesn`t the home plate ump who does a delayed triple lindy to call a strike out get his ass kicked?

Never forget Clemons yelling @ the ump to get back behind the plate. It was a riot.

No but use the technology to force them umps to follow the rules and not make up their own zone.

Ever notice they are better for big games with a national tv audience? Like the pitch track from ESPN. They do not like being shown up. They know their balls and strikes are going to be scrutinized and they try harder to be accurate.

I know - some umps think they are bigger than the game. Pitch track every game. Rate the ump every game. Pink slips to umps that are not at least X% accurate - that would clean it up.

While I agree they could do a more fair and accurate job with a kid w a freaking iPad behind home plate calling balls and strikes im still torn. I've put a lot of work into my ump notebook over the years and find them a very usefull tool in my capping so kinda rather they kept it the same
