Baseball refutes report Selig to watch Bonds

I hope Bud Selig takes a stand and doesn't take part in that circus.

Baseball refutes report Selig to watch Bonds

Commish says he still hasn't decided whether to see record HR

SAN FRANCISCO - Will he or won’t he? Baseball commissioner Bud Selig apparently has made his decision.

SI.com reported Tuesday that Selig will be in attendance when controversial San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds breaks Hank Aaron’s all-time home run record.

However, in a Tuesday afternoon interview with New York radio station WFAN, Selig claimed that he still has not decided whether he will attend.

Bonds has 751 career homers, four shy of tying one of the most hallowed marks in American sports history.

One of the major questions surrounding Bonds’ pursuit of the record has been whether or not Selig would be in attendance when one of the most scrutinized players in baseball history sets a new standard.

According to the report, barring something unforeseen and drastic, Selig plans to be there when Bonds hits No. 756, something that likely will happen in the coming weeks.

On Monday, a day before his 14th All-Star appearance, Bonds was unfazed when asked if he cared if Selig would attend his record-breaking feat.

“I have to do my thing,” Bonds said. “It’s up to Bud. Bud is his own man. If Bud shows up or doesn’t show up, I’m still going to play baseball.”

A major cloud surroundings Bonds’ pursuit of Aaron as he has long been linked with baseball’s steroids scandal.

The 42-year-old Bonds is admired in his home ballpark, but often booed on the road with fans suggesting his accomplishments are tainted due to steroids.

Aaron already has said he would not attend Bonds’ milestone, something Bonds understands.

“No one can determine when that’s going to happen, and Hank has a life, too,” Bonds said Monday. “You could go weeks. You expect this man to just travel all over this continent for weeks?

“It’s just not fair to him. That’s just all it’s about. If you can predict what you’re going to do and he can get there and like OK, bam, it’s going to be this day and this time, that’s a different scenario.”

seven-time National League MVP, Bonds has 17 homers and drawn 91 walks - 30 intentional - this season. His 1.101 OPS is tops in baseball.

Bonds will bat second in Tuesday night’s Midsummer Classic, which may not be his last. Bonds’ agent Jeff Borris confirmed to SI that his client will be back next season.

“He’s going to play next year,” Borris said. “As long as he keeps going like he’s going and stays in one piece, and there’s no reason to think he won’t, Barry will be a free agent.”

    1) Bonds hasn't been found guilty of using steroids
    2) If he did use steroids, they weren't a banned substance
    3) Selig knew that steroids were in baseball (just as they were prevalent in every other sport) and did nothing about it
