Pablo Sandoval Hitless In Last 38 At Bats

San Francisco Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval established a new franchise record Wednesday night, and it’s a distinction he’d rather not have.

Sandoval struck out looking in the top of the sixth inning in Wednesday’s game against the Colorado Rockies, making him hitless in his last 38 at-bats. Sandoval’s 0-for-38 streak is now the longest in the franchise’s history since arriving in San Francisco in 1958. The previous record-holder was Johnnie LeMaster, who was hitless in 37 consecutive at-bats during the 1984 season.

Sandoval, who was playing every day despite his struggles at the plate, pinch-hit for starting pitcher Johnny Cueto Wednesday night. Unfortunately for him, beginning the game on the bench did nothing to change his luck.

The hope for Pablo Sandoval when he rejoined the Giants in early August was that a return to more familiar surroundings would result in a resurgence. Having signed with the Red Sox as a free agent in winter of 2014, Sandoval’s two-plus seasons in Boston were marred by injuries (he played in just three games in 2016) and ineffectiveness when he was able to play.
