In his book Planet of the Umps, umpire Ken Kaiser said the hardest ball he ever saw hit was by Don Baylor. Kaiser said the ball glanced off the third baseman's glove and then sailed over the left field wall for a home run.
Another Baylor story. All spring training, Colorado's mascot Dinger would be doing what mascots do -
and every time Don would walk past Dinger's locker room, he'd loudly say "You know you're not funny, right?"
and jibes of that nature. One day, Baylor poked his head in before a game and saw Dinger was reading a mystery novel
to pass the time, a chapter a day.
Baylor waits a few days until Dinger is deeper into the book and gets his attention. "The wife did it," he says and walks away. That game, Dinger goes on the field for his daily skit and tears up the book in front of Baylor and throws it at him. "Finally," Baylor nods in approval. "THAT'S funny."
