Bronson Arroyo Says He May Have Played His Last Game
Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Bronson Arroyo may be on his way out of professional baseball.
The right-hander told Reds beat writer C. Trent Rosecrans that his shoulder is getting worse and that Sunday could have been his last game.
Arroyo was shaky on Sunday against the Dodgers, allowing five runs on seven hits and earning the loss in the 8-7 defeat. He opened the game by striking out the side, but was tagged for three runs on four hits the following inning, headlined by a two-run double off the bat of his Sunday counterpart, pitcher Kenta Maeda. In the third, he served up home run No. 23 — the most in the league for any pitcher — when Logan Forsythe connected on a two-run shot.
The Reds plated six runs over the final three frames but still fell on Sunday, marking the ninth straight loss for the club. Arroyo’s line pushed him to 3-6 with a 7.35 ERA.
Over his 14 starts the Reds are 7-7, but Arroyo hasn’t won a game since May 5. On a separate note, the last time he started a game without allowing a home run was April 30.
Not only is the veteran climbing up the hill at age 40, he also suffered a UCL tear in 2014 that sidelined him for the entire 2015 season. He pitched for the Reds for eight seasons from 2006-13. This season was the first back in the majors since 2014, when he was with the Diamondbacks.
Winless since June 8, the Reds will be back in action on Monday when they travel to Tampa Bay to take on the Rays.
