Total joke. It matters as far as homefield goes in the World Series. So why not have the best players play?
AL Catcher
1 Ivan Rodriguez, Tigers 469,696
2 Joe Mauer, Twins 438,365
3 Jason Varitek, Red Sox 413,153
4 Jorge Posada, Yankees 392,908
5 Victor Martinez, Indians 206,377
Now, I know the manager gets to pick the substitutes, but the two AL catchers should be Posada and Martinez. No one else has been close to performing at their level. Hell, Johjima should be right there with Pudge for third.
Posada - .359, 7 HR, 39 RBI
Martinez - .318, 12 HR, 52 RBI
Johjima - .329, 7 HR, 27 RBI
Pudge - .287, 6 HR, 30 RBI
Mauer - .346, 1 HR, 14 RBI
Varitek - .270, 6 HR, 28 RBI
A couple other things.
- Loduca in a landslide at NL catcher? Really? And Martin 3rd?
LoDuca - .310, 3 HR, 17 RBI
Martin - .302, 7 HR, 40 RBI- Magglio Ordonez 5th in AL OF voting? The guy has been the MVP of the league to date and may make a run at the Triple Crown if he keeps up this pace (.366, 13 HR, 54 RBI). None of the four players ahead of him in the voting lead him in any of those categories.
- Andrew Jones 5th in the NL OF voting? He's hitting .221 and his power numbers aren't great (10 HR, 39 RBI).
- Moises Alou (.318, 2 HR, 13 RBI) 7th in NL OF voting and Matt Holliday (.355, 10 HR, 46 RBI) 13th.
I know a lot of this is irrelevant, but something has to be done about the voting for this. I mean, it's nice to have the fans involved, but they obviously don't know WTF they're doing. And if it's a popularity contest, the All-Star game needs to be totally inconsequential.
Sorry, that's my rant for the evening. Looking at the voting numbers recently had been bugging me, so I figured I'd write it all up and try to show at least a couple people the ridiculousness of this system.
