Saturday's Front Page Picks (May 19)

Play Padres, Maddux to mow down Mariners

    Game Time: 05/19/2007 10:05 PM -
    By: Marc Lawrence | playbook.com

Greg Maddux, even at 41, remains a masterful artist on the mound, and that makes the Padres the right play tonight in Seattle against the Mariners.

Padres 41-year-old right-hander Greg Maddux is showing no signs of wear.

Meanwhile, San Diego has performed their best this season on Saturday, winning five of six games. The Pads are 10-6 so far this month and 53-22 the last three years in May. San Diego has handled southpaws, such as Seattle starter Horacio Ramirez, fairly well this season going 9-3.

Back Maddux and the Padres here tonight.

    Free Pick: Padres -120

St. Louis Cardinals +150 to Upset Tigers Again

    Game Time: 05/19/2007 07:05 PM -
    By: L.T. Profit Sports Group | who2beton.com

Anthony Reyes helped propel the Cardinals to the championship by shutting down the Tigers in Game 1 of the World Series, and we look for St. Louis to upset Detroit again tonight.

The Detroit Tigers got little bit of revenge on the World Champion Cardinals last night, pummeling St. Louis 14-4.

However, we do like the Cards to bounce back tonight and pull off another upset at this nice price, just like in the World Series last season. Now granted, Anthony Reyes is 0-6 on the year while Detroit’s Nate Robertson is 3-3. However, Reyes actually has the better key numbers lately, with a 4.24 ERA and an excellent 1.06 WHIP in his last three starts, compared to 6.06 and 1.90 for Robertson. In fact, Robertson has allowed double-digit hits while failing to get past the fifth inning in each of his last two starts, which is bad news considering that the St. Louis offense is actually showing signs of a pulse as of late.

Finally, do not forget that Reyes tossed a gem vs. the Tigers in the Fall Classic, allowing just two runs and four hits in eight innings while winning Game 1 here in Detroit by a 7-2 count. We expect another solid effort tonight, and the Cardinals have also had the better bullpen so far, with a 3.32 pen ERA compared to 5.01 for the Tigers.

    Free Pick: Cardinals +150

    D-Rays to derail D-Train & Marlins

    Game Time: 05/19/2007 07:10 PM -
    By: Ben Burns | sportspic.com

The home dogs are the right play this evening down in the Sunshine State. Bet the Tampa Bay Devil Rays against Dontrelle Willis and the Florida Marlins.

Tampa right-hander Jae Seo has gotten off to a tough start this season and his ERA is admittedly ugly. However, he comes off a dominant effort at Toronto in which he held the Jays to just two hits (7 K, 2 BB through seven shutout innings). He was also strong in his last home start, holding the Twins to two runs through six complete innings.

Marlins southpaw Dontrelle Willis has struggled all season with a 5.30 ERA and 1.571 WHIP. The Marlins have lost his last two starts by a combined score of 12-3. Note that the Devil Rays have fared well vs. left-handed starters, averaging 4.9 runs per game while going a profitable 6-4 (+4.6).

Despite yesterday's victory, the Marlins remain a money-burning 8-12 (-5.6) when facing teams with a losing record. Consider a play on the home underdog.

    Free Pick: Devil Rays +110

    Go with Mets vs Yankees

    Game Time: 05/19/2007 03:55 PM -
    By: Matt Fargo | touthouse.com

The Yankees are having numerous troubles this year, and one of them is beating left-handers. Back the Mets at home in Shea this afternoon with veteran southpaw Tom Glavine on the hill.

The Mets were the top play winner on Friday and there is no reason to jump off them now. The price is not as good as it was last night, but that is no reason to abandon them as the matchup is more in their favor this afternoon.

The Mets have won three straight, five of six and eight of 10 while the Yankees have gone 2-5 during this recent roadtrip and fallen 10 games back in the American League East. They are stuck at four games under .500 including five games under .500 on the road.

Tom Glavine gets the call for the Mets and he is putting together another solid season as he refuses to let age get in the way. He is 4-1 with a 3.31 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in his nine starts with New York winning seven of those nine outings. He was on the bad side of some bad luck in his last game against the Cubs as he pitched well but Chicago was able to get bloop and ground ball hits to do most of the damage. He has won his last two starts against the Yankees over the last two years.

The Yankees have been average against left-handed starters, hitting .263 on the season but they have struggled of late, hitting just .213 over their last 10 games. After losing to Perez last night, New York is now 3-8 on the year against left-handed starters. This is the time of year that Glavine is at his best as he is 21-5 against the moneyline in the first half of the season over the last two seasons. He is also 24-8 as a favorite over the last two years overall. Darrell Rasner has been a pleasant surprise for the Yankees in their rotation but something says that he is ready for a shellacking. He will be facing a lineup that is hitting .282 on the season along with an on-base percentage of .354 and slugging percentage of .443, which are first, second and third respectively in all of baseball. While they are especially strong against left-handed pitching, facing righties is not a problem as they are now 96-59 against right-handed starters over the last two years.

Chalk up another one. Play the New York Mets for one unit.

    Free Pick: Mets -125

Chalk the Angels tonight vs Dodgers

    Game Time: 05/19/2007 09:05 PM -
    By: Jimmy Boyd | procappers.com

After starting the year on the DL, Angels right-hander Jered Weaver is showing signs of rounding into form. Back the Halos tonight at home against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Dodgers are 1-17 against the moneyline in road games in interleague play over the last three seasons. The Angels are 5-1 against the Dodgers at home over the last three seasons.

Jered Weaver, the Angels starting pitcher, has looked a lot better in his last three outings, posting a 2.34 ERA with the Angels going 2-1 against the moneyline. He will have his best performance of the year thus far tonight. Take the Angels.

    Free Pick: Angels -142

Chicago Cash: Cubs over White Sox

    Game Time: 05/19/2007 03:55 PM -
    By: Dave Price | procappers.com

This Windy City battle clearly is an advantage for the Cubs. Make your pick on the home team at Wrigley this afternoon against the White Sox.

The Cubs have great momentum heading into Game 2 of this series after picking up a nice win yesterday in beating their crosstown rivals the White Sox.

Right-hander Jason Marquis is the key to a Cubs win in Game 2. His 5-1 record and miniscule 2.22 ERA is all you need to know. Javier Vazquez goes for the Sox who are 0-3 in his last three starts, so we have to make Marquis our money man today.

    Free Pick: Cubs -124

I'd bet the other side of literally every one of these games.
