So Kirk Gibson walks into the ice cream shop that I work at. He's waiting in line like a normal guy and I can't believe it but it looks like I'm going to get to wait on him. I had to slow down a little so that my coworker would take the guy in front of him but whatever, that dude isn't even a baseball fan.

Gibson walks up and I say, "Mr. Gibson, I'm such a huge fan, my father loves you, what can I get for you?" Gibson replies, "Thanks kid, I really appreciate that, tell your old man thanks too!" adding, "I'll take a triple dip, waffle cone please."

I reply, "sure thing, Mr. Gibson, what flavors can I get for you?"

Gibson says, "what does it matter, I'm just going to fukking drop it anyway."

    Sad day.

Gibson was without a doubt my all-time hero growing up as a kid. Can't count how many Tigers caps I wore out as a kid trying to be like my hero.

1984 Tigers one of the all-time great clubs.

    Ironically enough:

Griff's bat is signed by "Kirk Gibson Jr."

The gag was inspired by Kirk Gibson's stellar year in 1988 and clutch walk off home run in that year's world series, which took place just a month before we started shooting
Back to the Future Part II.

The gag was concocted by production designer Rick Carter and me, in a discussion regarding what signature the bat should have on it.

Neil Canton, being a die-hard Giants fan, went along with it,.
seeing the humor in it, despite his total disdain for the Dodgers.

Personally know 2 people with Parkinson's -- just saw 1 at the supermarket on Saturday and he looked well and told me he felt good on his medication (early 50's, had to retire 3 years ago from his truck driving gig when diagnosed). Obviously he has many limitations but as jj mentioned, if diagnosed in early stages, the medications today can make it manageable. He has many years to go, tho (hopefully), so hard to say what his extended future is going to look like.

The other guy I know is in his upper 70's and was diagnosed 9 years ago; hadn't seen him in awhile but then saw him this past Christmas and he was doing better then I anticipated (walks with extremely pronounced "shuffling" of feet motion tho). Again, the medication is making things somewhat manageable.

Guess I bring this up cuz although it's without doubt a tough break for Gibson, it's certainly no death sentence disease; With his resources, he'll get the finest medical care/medications available going forward and more than likely he'll be able to manage it fairly well (and hopefully a breakthrough comes along soon with all the genome research/work now being done).

I watched that Gibson homer in a hospital room visiting a friend... will never forget it.

Not from the iconic perspective... '88 wins that argument hands-down

It's almost unreal when I read this story earlier today. I think of Gibson as one tough sob when he was in his prime. Loved his aggressive nature. But I have a question...

Is Parkinson's just a flip a coin disease? Or can it be prevented? Is it something that Gibson did wrong in his daily diet? Is it stress related? Just don't understand how Gibson just was diagnosed with it? It's sad.

I think Parkinsons is mainly hereditary, or bad hits to the head.
