Saturday's Front Page Picks (May 12)

Play Angels -120 with Colon vs. Texas

    Game Time: 05/12/2007 03:45 PM -
    By: Marc Lawrence | playbook.com/

Bartolo Colon has dominated the Rangers in his career, and he is showing no ill effects from off season surgery, so look for the Halos to prevail.

The Angels send former Cy Young winner Bartolo Colon to the mound today, and few pitchers have dominated an opponent as much as he has dominated the Rangers.

Colon’s teams are 17-7 in all of his career starts against the Rangers, and he is a perfect 4-0 with a 2.03 ERA in his last four starts in Arlington. Colon also has a commanding strikeout to walk ratio, with 18 punch-outs against only two free passes.

With Texas’s Kameron Loe owning a 5.76 ERA, we will back Big Bart and the Halos here today.

    Play: Angels -120

Tigers -115 to Roar over Twins

    Game Time: 05/12/2007 03:45 PM -

    By: Al McMordie | bigal.com/

The Tigers are a nice 12-5 on the road while the Twins are just 9-12 at home, and with Joe Mauer on the Disabled List and Chad Durbin in good form, look for another Detroit road win.

Last season, the American League Champion Tigers were one of only two teams in the league to have a better record on the road than they did at home.

In fact, Detroit had the best road record in the Major Leagues in 2006, and it looks like they are at it again in 2007. More than half of the Tigers’ 21 wins have taken place away from Comerica Park (12-5), while Minnesota has a losing 9-12 record at home.

Tiger right-hander Chad Durbin started out this season in rough fashion, allowing 16 earned runs in his first three starts, but since then he has really turned things around, with a 1.86 ERA and 0.93 WHIP in his last three outings with Detroit winning all of those games. The Tigers will really need Durbin to step it up, as they will be without ace Jeremy Bonderman on Sunday due to a recent finger injury, although he is yet to go on the Disabled List.

The Twins have lost three of four since putting their best hitter, catcher Joe Mauer, on the DL on May 6. They are also a miserable 3-8 in their last 11 home games, so take the Tigers.

    Play: Tigers -115

Take Texas +110 at Home vs. Halos

    Game Time: 05/12/2007 03:45 PM -

    By: L.T. Profit Sports Group | who2beton.com/

Bartolo Colon is off to a nice 3-0 start, but he is a candidate to break down at any time, and with Kameron Loe coming off of his best start of the year, take Texas as a home dog.

The Angels are now 4-0 in this season series after winning here last night, but we look for the Rangers to get some form of revenge here by breaking into the win column.

Kameron Loe showed some promise for Texas last season, and after a slow start this year, be broke through with a Quality Start in his last outing while limiting Toronto to one run and just three hits in 6.2 innings. Loe has also allowed three earned runs or less in three of his last four starts vs. the Angels, so we look for him to build on the momentum generated by that last start here.

Now granted Bartolo Colon is 3-0, and he has been brilliant vs. Texas throughout his career. Keep in mind however that he just recently came back from surgery, making him a candidate to throw in a clunker any time in the early season.

With the Rangers installed as home underdogs here, we will look for Loe to continue his success against the Angels.

    Play: Rangers +110

    Back Yankees, DeSalvo at Mariners

    Game Time: 05/12/2007 10:05 PM -
    By: Tom Stryker | 10starpicks.com

The last time these two hurlers met in New York, Seattle took home a close win. Look for the Yankees to turn the tables and get the triumph tonight at the Mariners.

Seattle's Miguel Batista and New York rookie Matt DeSalvo faced each other in the Big Apple back on May 7, with Batista and the Mariners walking away with the tight 3-2 victory. Expect a different outcome this time around.

Fresh from Triple-A Columbus, DeSalvo was making his first start in that contest and he performed very well. Over seven frames the young right-hander from New Castle, PA, was touched for only one earned run. Miguel's numbers were good too -- 6.1 innings pitched, nine hits and two earned runs -- however, this is not the spot for the big right-hander from Santo Domingo. At home this season Batista has been hit extremely hard. In 18.2 frames, No. 43 has been blasted for 13 earned runs and 20 hits. That breaks down to a lofty 6.27 ERA.

The Yankee brass will be taking their second look at DeSalvo and another strong performance by the youngster could lock up a roster spot. Take New York with listed pitcher DeSalvo.

    Play: Yankees -138

    Play Phils vs Cubbies

    Game Time: 05/12/2007 03:45 PM -
    By: John Ryan | sportspic.com

Look for the Phillies to extend their winning streak to three this afternoon when they host the Chicago Cubs in the City of Brotherly Love.

As I have been stating for the past week, this is a team that just feels like they are going to go on a big winning streak.

After a very slow start the Phillies have raised their season batting average to .268 and are batting .301 in home games at the hitter-friendly Citizen's Bank Park. The move by ace starter Brett Myers to the closer's role has really shored up the suspect bullpen. He is 3-3 in save opportunities over the past seven games.

Philadelphia acquired Freddy Garcia through free agency and he gets the nod today. After being on the DL with a minor injury to start the season he has steadily gotten back to his top level form.

Sometimes the flash stats do not reflect the current form of a starter and that is certainly the case here with Garcia. In his last start he went a solid six innings, yielding just two earned runs and six hits, and walking none.

The Chicago Cubs are 34-54 against the moneyline vs. teams whose hitters strike out seven or more times/game over the last two seasons. The Cubs are 13-24 against the moneyline in May games over the last two seasons. Chicago is 43-63 against the moneyline in day games over the last two seasons.

    Play: Phillies -130

Penny turns into dollars on Dodgers

    Game Time: 05/12/2007 10:10 PM -
    By: Dave Price | procappers.com

Brad Penny and the Dodgers are the right play tonight out west when Los Angeles hosts Kyle Lohse and the Cincinnati Reds.

We have to side with Brad Penny and the Dodgers here tonight.

Penny has been the best starter in the National League thus far with a perfect 4-0 record and a miniscule 1.39 ERA. The Dodgers are 6-1 with Penny on the mound this season and LA has dominated the Reds to the tune of 10-3 over the last three seasons. Take Los Angeles.

    Play: Dodgers -162

    Twins +105 to Tame Tigers

    Game Time: 05/12/2007 03:45 PM -
    By: L.T. Profit Sports Group | who2beton.com/

The Tigers are hot while the Twins are not, but with Chad Durbin turning up as a road favorite, all of the value lies with Minnesota here.

Yes, the Twins have been playing horribly lately while the Tigers have won 10 out of 11, but those factors are incorporated into this line.

The bottom line here is can you really trust Chad Durbin as a road favorite? Now granted Durbin has pitched well over his last three starts, but the journeyman still has a 5.45 ERA for the year, and he was touched up for six runs in just 4.1 innings the last time he faced Minnesota. Now Twins starter Sidney Ponson may be much maligned, but he has allowed a total of only four earned runs over his last two starts, and he actually pitched quite well the last time he faced the Tigers, allowing two runs and six hits in 7.1 frames.

The Twins also have the superior bullpen numbers to this point with that unit owning a 3.40 ERA, compared to the 4.40 ERA for the Detroit pen. All things considered, Minnesota offers some value as a home dog vs. Durbin.

    Play: Twins +105

    Take Tigers at Twins

    Game Time: 05/12/2007 03:45 PM -
By: Jimmy the Moose | sportspic.com

The Tigers should make easy work of Twins starter Sydney Ponson this afternoon. Make your play on Detroit today at the Metrodome against Minnesota.

The Tigers are 10-1 in their last 11 games. Detroit has won seven of their last eight games where they have been the favorite. Over his last three starts Chad Durbin is 2-0 with a 1.87 ERA and the Tigers have won all three games.

Minnesota starter Sydney Ponson is 2-4 on the season. His last two starts vs. the Tigers have resulted in team losses. The Twins have dropped seven of their last nine. Minnesota is 3-9 in their last 12 at home.

    Play: Tigers -120

Colon does have some big time stats against Texas (16-5 lifetime). I think the under is the better way to go in this game.
