These are two pitchers with very deceptive records, as Dontrelle Willis has a 5.35 ERA despite a 5-1 record, while Greg Maddux is a hard-luck 2-2, so take Maddux and the Padres as dogs.
Dontrelle Willis may be 5-1 while Greg Maddux is just 2-2, but those records do not reflect how each of these hurlers has pitched this season, so we feel that a correction is on order here.
Muddux has an outstanding 1.09 WHIP with a respectable 3.86 ERA, and if we toss out his fist start of the year, that ERA improves to 3.24 in his last four starts. He has also has success against Florida, allowing two earned runs or less in four of his last five starts against them. Conversely, Willis has gotten tremendous run support, as he actually has a poor 5.35 ERA and 1.59 WHIP. Willis has allowed at least four earned runs in each of his last three starts, yet the Marlins were fortunate enough to win two of them.
We feel that Willis’s luck runs out here, as the Fish do not figure to give him as much support vs. Maddux, so back the Pads as an underdog in this spot.
