    Tuesday's Best Bets MLB!

    7/22/14 Yesterday's Results: 3-1 July Record: 22-18 (55%)
    Yankees vs. Rangers
    Recommendation: OVER 9
Thestarting pitching is awful in this one and we should be looking at a highscoring affair tonight. Let’s start with Chase Whitley. Whitley pitched decentin his first couple of starts for the Yanks but his true colors have come tothe surface. He has a low 90’s fastball which is pretty average, a slider thatdoesn’t fool anyone, and a well below average changeup. Throw in the fact thathis command is bad and we’re looking at a guy without much upside. Even withnearly the whole starting rotation on the DL, Whitley is still in danger of beingbumped from a starter’s role. He allowed 3 runs in just over 3 innings lasttime out against the Orioles and he’s 0-3 with a 12.86 ERA in his last 4starts. Oh, and he hasn’t made it out of the 5th inning in any ofthose starts either. Yikes!
Rangersstarter Nick Martinez is just as bad if not worse. This is a guy who wasdrafted as an infielder for Texas back in the 18th round of the 2011draft. They converted him into a pitcher and it’s looking like that may notlast for too long. Martinez is 0-5 with an 8.10 ERA since he picked up his onlycareer victory back in May. Another guy with below average stuff who just can’tget it done at the big league level.
Thisgame has slugfest written all over it. It should be noted though that Mark Teixeirawill sit this one out with a hurt back. Tex has been injury prone for a whileso it shouldn’t be much of a problem for New York, who is used to playingwithout him. Jacoby Ellsbury is on fire and the rest of the lineup should allhave big games. The Rangers are likely to get Alex Rios back tonight. He’shitting over .300 and will be a nice addition to the Texas order. Take theOVER.
    Giants @ Phillies
    Recommendation: Giants -120
My takeon this game has much more to do with the teams as a whole rather than thestarting pitchers. Many “public” bettors factor in the starters way too muchwhen deciding who to wager on. That’s no to say that starting pitching isn’timportant, because it most certainly is. But putting your money solely on theguy taking the hill is definitely the wrong move.
YusmeiroPetit gets the nod tonight with Matt Cain going back to the DL. Petit has twosides to him. He looks like a polished veteran at times, and others he cancompletely unravel. The same can be said for Roberto Hernandez. Decent stuff attimes, getting completely blown up others. Overall Petit is the slightly betterpitcher overall, but the Giants will win this game collectively.
Itseemed like the Giants slump was never going to end. The great start to theseason was a distant memory and weeks turned into months of bad baseball. Itappears that the Giants have finally found their groove again and are starting tostring together some wins. The good news is that despite their lengthy poorperformance, San Fran is still right in the battle for the NL West. Theyactually have a big advantage schedule wise through the second half, so I wouldn’tbe surprised at all if this team captures the division.
ThePhillies are downright awful. They’re an older club with some key veterans whoaren’t accustomed to losing. Well they’re doing just that, going 9-18 in theirlast 27 games. Unlike some other squads such as the Cubs who play hard despitebeing out of the race, Philly just doesn’t show any determination. If the frontoffice has any smarts, they unload some of their high priced talent before thetrade deadline. This team is in a position where they should be calling upprospects and looking towards the future. The Giants are a much better team andhave something to fight for. I’ll look for that energy to carry them to avictory tonight. Take the Giants.
    Tigers @ Diamondbacks
    Recommendation: Tigers -130
RickPorcello’s 12 wins aren’t bad at this point in the season. In fact, they’retied for the most wins in the majors. Porcello has been dishing out someexcellent performances, going 4-1 with a 1.96 ERA in his last 5 starts. He hasalso been stellar on the road, allowing only 1 run in his last 22 innings. Despitehis success, Porcello was denied a spot on this year’s All-Star roster. Thatcould add some extra motivation, not that he needs it.
RookieChase Anderson sure has had an up and down rookie campaign. He had a good startlast time out against Miami, but prior to that went through a really roughstretch. Anderson lacks one of the most important things in baseball, consistency. The Tigers have one of the best offenses in the league and therewon’t be room for any mistakes from Chase tonight. Detroit is also the bestroad team in the league, winning 12 of 15. Austin Jackson remains on fire andhe added to his remarkable July with a home run and a double on Monday. ToriiHunter has joined Jackson in the efficiency department and we all know what amonster Miguel Cabrera is. We cashed a nice winner with Detroit yesterday andthe situation sets up for us to do the same this evening. Take the Tigers.

As long as Petit throws a decent game I think the Giants are rounding into form nicely on offense. Like the play but would recommend only a 1 unit play.
