The Red Sox are coming off a thrilling victory capped off with a david ortiz grand slam to rally Boston from certain defeat. The series would have been over had it not been for that blast and a huge Red Sox comeback. It is not likely that the tigers make that mistake again. The Red Sox were fairly dominated over the first two games at home. They were held hitless until the sixth inning of game 2 and they struck out 32 times in those two games. The detroit pitching staff is a clear advantage for the Tigers in this series, They will need their ace Justin Verlander to right the ship for them at home.
Last time Verlander took the ball he was pitching to extend the tigers life in the playoffs and he was fantastic. Piutching eight shutout innings against the Athletics while striking out 11, while giving up only 2 hits. Ortiz has done the most damage against Verlander out of the Sox lineup. he is 10 for 27 with two home runs, after that it gets pretty ugly for the Sox. Dustin Pedroia is 1 for 18, shane victorino is 0 for 6, Jacoby Ellsbury is 5 for 22, Jarrod Saltalamachia is 2 for 15 and Gomes is 0 for 8. Verlander should continue to dominate the Red Sox batters today.
Boston will turn to Lackey in this game, Lackey went 10-13 during the reg season with a 3.52 ERA. Lackey didnt look very impressive in his last start against the Tampa Bay Rays surrendering 4 runs in 5.1 innings pitched, he gave up 7 hits and 3 walks. The tigers have hit him very well over there large saple size. Victor martinez has a .407 BA against lackey over 27 at bats, Peralta is 11 for 31, feilder is 4 for 9 and Cabrera is 4 for 12 with one homer.
The Red Sox are 1-5 in Lackeys last 6 road starts and 1-7 in their last eight when playing @Detroit. The Red Sox might have all the momentum heading into this series but the pitching matchup Favors the tigers heavily. Expect Detroit to bounce back nicely and take the first game @ Comerica Park.
