and his job is not freaking blow the game!!!!!!! the guy has faced the best of the best in the post season FIVE, FIVE Word Series Rings. throwing ONE pitch.

that means every single hitter who stood in that box, knew what pitch was coming, they KNEW and they still could not bring their teams back to win ball games.

all you people saying "put Kershaw in in 9th Dan Haren in the 9th". are you serious? you have to be the 16 year old posters.

closers are a certain breed. have you stepped out on the mound before and felt the pressure of trying to close a game? there is a MENTAL aspect to it. that some STARTING pitchers just dont have. you have to have ice water in your veins. knowing the game is on the line and complete control of your hands.

most guys crumble under that pressure, which is why you u dont even see pitchers last more than 6 innings anymore.

    Why all the love?

The love is there because he is a stand-up guy, a man utterly loyal to his team (him and Jeter are the fukking man), and the GREATEST STATISTICAL CLOSER OF ALL TIME!!!!!!!! If anyone in baseball deserves love, it is Mariano Rivera.

    Come on, Deuce.

You're much better than this, Deuce.

Comparing Apples to Oranges.......Some of those guys couldn't come close to doing what Mo did as a closer

Nothing wrong with being an elite closer......Yankees don't win 5 titles with him, plain and simple....Maybe 2 or 3

smoltz was a good closer but they needed him to become a starter rivera was a starter but he SUCKED thats why he never became a starter again those guys i listed could pitch WHENEVER wainwright was another one if they wanted to keep him in the bullpen when they won the ws he would of been a beast

They all probably would have been good....But not Rivera good

Maybe a few of them would have been, we'll never know

A closer's mental makeup is alot different than a Starter's

No one is saying Rivera is the best pitcher ever, but he is the best closer ever and was a big reason for all of the postseason success the Yankees had while he's been there

Don't see what the big deal is in giving him his props

I thought it was a very touching scene last night but I couldn't help but wonder: Where the heck was Posada? IMHO, sending him out with Jeter would've made more sense than Pettitte, but sending the 3 of them would certainly have also worked.

if he had started out with either of those teams he still would have ended up with the Yankees with the way he pitched.

The Marlins and Astros get rid of every good player.

here is only thing that matters

Teams leading by one run after eight innings have gone on to win 85.7 percent of the time. That number goes up to 93.7 percent when leading by two runs, and 97.5 percent when leading by three runs.

Mull that over, and then please tell me why Rivera is so amazing for having an 89.1 percent career save rate (which, by the way, is lower than Joe Nathan's). Because, basically, Rivera was not used except in games the Yankees were going to win 88 percent of the time anyway. Actually, the percentages were usually higher than that. According to Elias, of Rivera's 652 career saves, just under a third (210) were with a one-run lead when he took the mound while 216 were with a two-run lead, 180 with a three-run lead and 46 with a lead of at least four runs.

Not sure why you are laughing. He is the only pitcher off hand I can think of that throws the cutter as effective as Rivera. This one pitch was what made him so dominate. What Rivera has done in the proper context is simply not that impressive.

It's not what the TV tells me.

It's called reality. You might want to look into it.

If you don't understand why everyone is supposedly wasting this time gushing over Rivera, then I really can't help you. None of us can.

Do you honestly think that every MLB team -- Red Sox included -- would be giving him this kind of a sendoff if his accomplishments were overrated by those who know the game best? The guy was a pro's pro both on and off the field. Closers have come and gone through the years, but they've never been able to match his consistency and longevity. His postseason numbers are overwhelming. He has the lowest ERA basically ever. He did it during the steroid era for nearly 20 full years without fail.

Baseball's best recognizes him because he deserves it. He is an honest, humble, hard-working guy in the midst of scandal, deceit, corruption and cheating. Oh, and on top of that, he's the best statistically at what he does as well. Ever.
