Jonathan Papelbon on the Phillies clubhouse: “I haven’t seen any leadership”

You tend not to see much in the way of clubhouse drama in Philly. It’s a veteran-laden team with a manager whose teams have no real history of drama of any kind. So Jonathan Papelbon going on the radio and saying this is surprising to say the least:

Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbondid not mince words this week when asked about what it is that his team lacks. ”Since I’ve been here I haven’t seen any leadership,” Papelbon said.
He followed it up with vague comments about how the team has “more to lose than it has to prove” and about how he feels that he should have spoken up more than he did last year.

But really, the next time a relief pitcher is viewed as a team leader in a big league clubhouse will likely be the first time, and Papelbon likely knows that. As a result, it’s hard to see these comments as anything other than a criticism of Charlie Manuel, Jimmy Rollins and other Phillies vets.

Hard to lead when you're on the DL all the time and Utley stays on it. Howard too interested in doing sandwich ads. Phillies are going to be so over rated.

Maybe Papelbon should be the vocal clubhouse leader

after practice in the locker room he could be
like " Alright fellas get your damn uniform off and get your asses in the shower!

and then if any of the rookies try to hang back and wait until everyone is done showering he could be
like "We Do this shit As a Team!!! everyone get in the shower together!!

Papelbon is a f\*g, i'm sure he loves the showering with 24 other dudes at the same time!

If you look up Douche Bag in the dictionary it should have a picture of Papelbumb

Dude, their top 3 with Halladay, Lee, and Hamels guarantees them to be over .500

Phils added Michael Young and Delmon Young to their line up, Utley is 100 percent finally, and Howard trimmed down.

    Don't be a dur dude.

Hamels, Lee, and Halladay won't win 60 games let alone pitch in games where they win 82. Their 4-5 pitchers are weak. Ruiz is starting the year on the naughty list. Young is starting the year on the DL and is a OBP disaster. Ben Revere is an under rated player though. If they can stay healthy they'll be above .500...I just think they're getting too long in the tooth and have a history of injuries to stay healthy though.

    Jimmy Rollins quit last year.

Manuel had 2 talks with him about running out plays, and then finally benched him for half-assing it. That shouldn't happen with a guy like Rollins. No one needs to tell Jeter how to play the game.

So, I think Papelbon's comments may carry some weight.

Manuel is a lame duck this year and he knows it. Howard got married in the offseason and looks like he put on 50 pounds. Hamels had to stop his offseason throwing sessions because his arm is sore from being overworked last year. The outfield is horrendous. Fade the phils in 2013 you will make money. By the way I am a phillies fan.

Im not sure what Kyle Kendrick 2013 will see but he had a 2.87 ERA over the second half of the season which would of ranked him 7th if he had done it all year. Just Saying.

Roy Halladay struggled mightily Tuesday, giving up seven runs in 2 2/3 innings against the Tigers.

Halladay was throwing in the mid-80s today, which is a very discouraging sign. While he said afterwards that he's not having any physical problems at all, he indicated that he felt lethargic because of a new workout regimen and an altered pitching schedule. Maybe that's all it was, but we're still very concerned that Halladay's velocity is going in the wrong direction.
