Matheny a retard no doubt, maybe he will learn as he goes..sure duncan aint there but the guys that are pitching all know/believe/still follow his philosophies....Mozalock will make a move that impact the team (prob wont be glamorous but effective)...but with Berkman about to return and with the abundance of very good bats in this lineup it is moronic to discount them in this division.. every year we here same bs bout cincy "hasnt played their best ball yet", well i got news for folks it doesnt get much better for them and their coach has been a fukkin retard a lot longer than matheney and will surely have his arms run into the ground by sept..

as a bucco fan that has been my christmas morning for years

To shift the topic back to McCutchen... McCutchen didn't improve much from year 1 to year 3... but now year 4 and he is playing like a superstar... at age 25.

So it is probably dumb to even project Castro out until he has (or doesn't have) his WHOA season, and I'd probably give him til at least 25-26 on that before you say it isn't coming.

Castro is the most frustrating player I've ever seen in a Cubs uniform so I change my mind on him often.

Starlin has alot of time to develop on his side.

and if you are a cub fan you kinda want it to take awhile, so his peak coincides with theo's rebuilding plan and allows the cubs to extend castro to a reasonable contract like the pirates did with AM this offseason
yeah most guys castro's age are in AA figuring out off speed stuff still

The Cashner vs Rizzo trade looks like a fantastic success, for one thing. Rizzo's swing is very easy and pure and the ball flies off his bat. And again, he's just 22.

Also, Marshall for Wood was another pretty solid trade. Wood is pitching pretty well and Marshall is struggling badly.

Do Drew and Lackey worry you at all for the future? Two of the worst contracts I've ever seen in baseball -- especially Lackey. Theo should've known better re: the west coast/Heath Bell advantage.

Sometimes bad deals are made in hopes they will pay out at least for a couple of seasons when you need them the most, AKA, in the window.

For instance, if you know you need a pitcher, and suspect a guy will suck down the road, but think he can be successful for a few years in your window, do you make the deal and overpay him? It is a fine line at times.

What would Theo have seen in Lackey to justify that kind of contract though? Are you telling me that was his best available option?

That might be going a little in depth.

That being said, he was obviously overpaid... but any free agent starting pitcher who eats innings, wins games, posts a solid ERA, avoids the DL consistently will be dramatically overpaid.
