    EP36's College Dogpile

Starting to get to the tail end of the regular season. So getting revved up about the idea of Regionals and Super Regionals and the College World Series. Wanted to start honing up, so going to play a few here and there. Lines are few - so the # of plays will be made accordingly, all these from 5Dimes. Not promising anything, but I love NCAA baseball and you can get some nice lines with books not knowing a ton about the sport until the market starts adjusting with more action in the postseason.

    May 10th: Auburn +2.5 [-110] @ 7:30pm ET
The Tigers travel to Arkansas for an important weekend series as they try to cling to their chances of making the SEC tournament and potentially getting into Regional Play in the postseason. The Tigers were looking like a solid shot to be there until about a month ago when they went into a tail spin that has seen them drop from 1st in the SEC West to the 10th spot overall. This is a squad that has beaten some of the top tier teams in series against LSU & Ole Miss, but also been swept by lowly Alabama on the road. Auburn has the top average in the SEC @ .317 and will need it against the nationally ranked Razorbacks who rank 3rd in team ERA @ 2.93. Auburn's ERA is 3.79. Both teams are near the bottom of the league in fielding percentage. Arkansas is solid at home, 27-6 on the season. They go with a fill-in for their usual starter in Game 1s with DJ Baxendale in for Ryan Stanek. That should be a break for the Tigers as Baxendale is the hardest hit of their regular starters with a .260 BA against compared to .241 for Stanek. Auburn throws Jon Luke Jacobs who has a microscopic .199 BA against. Even more amazing is that of the 36 hits given up by JLJ in 10 games, only five have been for extra bases. If he can give them a quality start, I like Auburn to keep this game close and perhaps have a chance to win.

5Dimes. They are the only book that I have ever seen NCAAB lines on during the regular season. They don't list many, but TV games I think they have started putting up. Obviously we're not going to see a wide variety of lines until the Regionals and I don't think I have seen a total ever posted until the Regionals if then.

I am personally looking for a parlay partner [Maybe Dodgers ML?] for this because the price is just off the charts, but I like the spread.

    May 11th: Mississippi State +2.5 [-210]
The Diamond Dogs get a crack at Florida with a great pitching match-up to open on Friday. State sends out Chris Stratton who has turned himself into one of the best pitchers in the country by adding a nasty slider to his arsenal. He faces Gators #1, Hudson Randall. Stratton is 9-0 on the season with a superb 2.09 ERA. Randall is 5.1 with a 3.53 ERA, but he has been solid since coming back from taking several weeks off due to having a dead/sore arm. State has to be ready for making contact against Randal who has walked only six batters all season in 58.2 IP. He has a .260 BA against. Stratton has been a shutdown #1 all season with a .207 BA against. He has 101 Ks in 82.1 IP with a breakout game against LSU this year w/17 Ks. The Gators are far and above a superior offense with a .286 BA compared to .254 for MSU. The Diamond Dogs have scored the third fewest runs among SEC teams while Florida ranks 4th best. Both teams have superb pitching. State ranks 1st with a 2.78 team ERA with Florida right behind them at 2.91. Looking at Stratton's starts, the Bulldogs have been able to get off to strong series starts with the righty pitching. Since SEC play began, State is 6-2 in his series opening starts with both losses coming by single runs. If Stratton delivers another quality start, expect State to stick around late in this game.

Tough beat. Was 2-1 going into the bottom of the 8th. They left Stratton in and he gave up a 2 run HR. 4-1 final.

    May 14th: Clemson +160
This number dove a little bit ago as Clemson looks for the series sweep in Game 2 of a double header today to make things in the ACC Atlantic Division very interesting. Florida State only needs one win in their remaining four games to wrap up the Division Title, but Clemson has pounded them for 16 runs in the first two games of this series. Johnathan Meyer for Clemson. Luke Weaver for FSU. Weaver has a 5.52 ERA and has only started five times. Meyer has a 3.51 ERA with five spot starts and mostly relief work for the season. Both teams have hittable pitchers and some good pop offensively. Ride the momentum with Clemson in what could be another masher that looks fairly even. Starts soon @ 6pm ET.

Man I wish they had a total for this game. There are going to be a ton of runs. Unfortunately, FSU is going to be hanging up a lot of them early. Clemson left a couple stranded. This pitcher for Clemson isn't going to last long at this rate. Expecting double digits for one of these teams.

    May 16th: Arizona State +110
Home dog in this in-state battle between two nationally ranked teams as Arizona visits ASU. The Wildcats toss out freshman Matthew Troupe for his first start after 18 appearances out of the bullpen. He's got good stuff with 30 Ks in 22 IP, but is hittable as his BAA attests to @ .297. ASU tosses out Darin Gillies, a Freshman starter making his 10th start for the Sun Devils. He owns a 4.78 ERA, but has been good about keeping hits against to singles with just nine extra base hits [1 HR] in 43 hits allowed. He has also been hit well though with a BAA @ .301. The bullpens likely get involved here which should be an advantage for ASU. Their top two out of the pen [Ravago/Barrett] have ERAs under 2.25. Arizona only has two pitchers on its staff with ERAs under 3.00 and both are starters. The Cats win with offense, leading the PAC-12 with a .329 avg and 343 runs. ASU is 6th @ .289 with 297 runs scored. The Sun Devils do have a distinct power advantage with 38 HRs to Arizona's 17. Neither team is great fielding the ball, so errors might hurt either side. Arizona lost 12-8 @ Tempe earlier this season in the only meeting so far. The two teams have a three game series coming up to end the PAC-12 slate next week. ASU has been tough to beat at home in conference play with a 12-1 record and are 20-5 overall at Packard Stadium. Given their toughness at home, I think ASU rates a solid shot here in a game likely to be decided in the bullpen with whatever team gets a better start having a leg up heading into the middle to late innings. ASU won't panic if it is down late as they have nabbed some big come-from-behind wins at home.

The Rebels are on the road to finish SEC play @ Vanderbilt. They throw out their top dog in sophomore Bobby Wahl. Wahl is 5-1 with a 2.18 ERA and is a Golden Spikes finalist. Vandy counters with sophomore T.J. Pecoraro who is 0-4 with a 4.60 ERA. This will be just his 6th start of the season. He's been a mix of good and bad with a stellar start in a close loss to LSU, but a couple others where he failed to pitch deep into games and put the Commodores behind the 8-ball early. Ole Miss is the superior offensive club with a .303 team average and 311 runs scored. Vandy is hitting .268 with 288 runs scored. Ole Miss' team ERA is 3.50. Vandy is 4.20. Vanderbilt is hot though, having won three straight SEC series, including against two top teams in Kentucky and LSU. However, the interesting note here is that Vanderbilt has lost their series opener in SEC play eight out of nine times. With the starting pitching edge to Ole Miss if Wahl brings his usual good stuff, the Rebels may keep that trend going.

    May 17th: Central Florida +170
UCF has billed this series finale in C-USA with Rice as the biggest in school history as it will decide the C-USA regular season champs. Rice is ranked 5th, UCF is ranked 13th. Both teams are 15-6 in conference play. The big difference in this series could be the bats of UCF. While the Knights only hit 12 points better than Rice on the season - .298 to 2.86, they have scored 56 more runs. UCF is also a terror on the basepaths with 83 steals, 20 more than the next best team in the conference. UCF has moved up lefty Chris Matulis to battle Rice's Matthew Reckling in the opener tonight. Reckling is a stud with an 8-1 mark and a 2.45 ERA. Matulis was solid at 6-0 with a 2.73 ERA. Rice is the traditional power here, but this UCF squad shouldn't be scared of this series as they have scheduled tough teams in Florida, Florida State and Miami early in the year @ home. They were 0-4 against those national powers, but lost three of those games by a single run. UCF isn't overmatched in this one, which makes the lofty moneyline @ home a good proposition to me. They beat Rice in a series in 2011 on the road and this UCF squad may be better than last year's.

Ole Miss lost. They got hosed on a call that would have tied it 1-1 in the 6th. Kind of changed the complexion of the game some. Weird game. Vandy only got three hits, but was able to piece walks and errors into three runs and a win. UCF up 8-3 in the 5th, but it's a rain delay and Rice has the bases loaded with two outs. Hoping they can resume.

Wasn't sure how 5Dimes would handle the suspended game, but pick still pending - hopefully that works out and UCF can hang on to cash a big dog to get this headed back in the right direction. Should be quite a few games listed this weekend, I think - being a big weekend for some of the power conferences.

Not 100% sure of the pitching match-ups, but these were the probables listed before yesterday's series opener which NC State won 10-5.

    May 18th: N.C. State +210
The price in this one just flat out is insane to pass on. Yes, Florida State is ranked #1 in the country, but N.C. State is red hot with wins now in 15 of its last 16 overall. The Wolfpack is 2nd in the Atlantic Division, three games behind FSU. Both teams have clinched spots in the ACC Tournament with FSU the likely #1 overall seed if they either grab one win this weekend or North Carolina loses once to Virginia Tech. State should be sending out Ethan Ogburn who has bounced back and forth between the pen and rotation, he is 4-2 with a 2.91 ERA. FSU was supposed to send out their freshman sensation Brandon Leibrandt. He has a 3.01 ERA. The two teams are about dead-on in most offensive categories with NC State having a slightly better average, FSU scoring a few more runs - but NC State ranks miles ahead with steals. They lead the ACC with 87 before yesterday's game whereas Florida State has 55. NC State ranks slightly ahead in ERA, about a quarter of a run better and also ranks 2nd in the ACC in Ks. These games have little bearing on anything outside of tournament positioning, so it's anyone's guess if the effort level drops or rises as a result. Still, the Wolfpack have held their own against the top clubs in the ACC that they have played with a 1-2 mark against UNC where their two losses on the road were by one run and three runs; 2-1 against Clemson with a one run loss in extra innings and now 1-0 against FSU. FSU is 25-5 at home, so home losses are rare, but the Wolfpack have confidence and momentu,. They can hang with this team, so the big plus odds are where I hang my money today. If they can get a decent outing from their starter and save their bullpen to the middle innings, they know they can compete. They came from behind down 4-1 on Thursday, so deficits won't scare this squad. This price has also dropped about 50 cents from about an hour ago.

State took out Kentucky in Game 1 of this series with superior pitching and timely hitting, 3-1 the final. The Diamond Dogs don't sport a very potent offense, but their pitching staff from top to bottom keeps them in almost every game. Game 2 of this series pits Junior Kendall Graveman [2.69 ERA] for the Dogs up against Kentucky junior Jerad Grundy who sports a 3.91 ERA. Graveman comes in off a stellar starts against Florida last time out, shutting them out over 7.2 IP. That win actually booked State into the SEC tournament. State has allowed two runs or less in 12 of their last 16 games overall, so if they get any offense - they give themselves a great shot to win. Kentucky is third best in the SEC @ .302 compared to State's anemic .249 with a run differential in favor of Kentucky at +109. State's 2.70 ERA is the best in the SEC. Kentucky is at 3.52. Kentucky has the added pressure of trying to hang onto a one game lead over South Carolina in the SEC East and are now tied with LSU for the #1 seed in the postseason tournament. Mississippi State is the poster child for pitching beats offense. With pressure on UK and none really on the Diamond Dogs, plus money to see if pitching again wins out.

Split the dogs today. NC State falling short, 3-2 .. but Mississippi State knocking off Kentucky again, 4-3. Hoping to play some on Saturday, but won't have a chance to do much digging if the lines are hung late ... so may not do anything until Sunday. Conference tourneys next week for the big boys, so there should be a lot of day baseball! Hopefully some damn totals!

SEC tournament started today. Waiting to see if more lines are hung, right now they have just the mid-afternoon game between Arkansas and Mississippi State. Huge ML price on Arkansas @ -3325. Pretty much all the other big conferences start tomorrow: Big 12, C-USA and ACC. Big East and Mountain West I know start Wednesday too, but I imagine most of the lines will be from SEC, Big 12. CUSA & ACC if we get many.

May 22nd [SEC Tournament]: Mississippi State +250
Razorbacks and Mississippi State start it off with Arkansas sending out sophomore Ryne Stanek. Stanek shut down the Diamond Dogs with 6.2 IP of shutout ball in one of the two games Arkansas took on the road against State this season. Keep in mind, one of those was an 8-5 win in extra innings, so the series was competitive. Stanek is 6-3 with a 2.96 ERA on the season. He will need to show he has no ill effects from being nailed with a liner on his shoulder in his last start that forced him to leave early. All signs are that he is just fine. MSU throws out freshman Brandon Woodruff. He is 0-2 with a 3.46 ERA on the season with just a handful of starts. MSU had trouble hitting all season with a .253 team BA. Arkansas ranked 4th at .283. Arkansas comes in having won five of its last six and performed well on the road this season with series wins over MSU and Florida. State comes in off an invigorating sweep of one of the top teams in the country in Kentucky @ home. This is a team that has gotten hot at the right time with 13 wins in their last 18 games. These two teams finished with identical 16-14 marks in the SEC West, so the price is a bit out there to me. State knows that if they are going to win, it will be with pitching and winning tight ballgames. That they busted out with 11 runs in their regular season finale - could bode well for the tournament which is a double elimination format.

    Auburn +320

That's next up. Unlike the Mississippi State line where the dog made sense, I think Auburn is a longshot in this one. They beat the Gators in the series finale after getting pounded in the first two games by a combined score of 16-1. Unfortunately Auburn's starter today [Jon Luke Jacobs] got rocked in one of those games and may be under the gun again. Auburn has a good offense, but as shown in that series ... pitching > offense. Looking at the nightcap between Georgia & Vanderbilt, think there is a play there.

Mississippi State hanging on against Arkansas. 3-1 in the 9th ...

May 22nd [SEC Tournament]: Vanderbilt -105
It's a case of hot vs. cold in this one. Georgia comes into the SEC Tournament with two inexplicable losses to bottom feeding Alabama to close out their regular season slate. That leaves UGA below .500 in league play and likely in need of some wins to try and secure a postseason birth in the Regionals. Vandy meanwhile is streaking at the right time with four straight series wins and five series wins in their last six SEC series. That included a sweep of Ole Miss to end the regular season and series wins over powers Kentucky & LSU. Vanderbilt opens with Drew VerHagen on the mound to protect their best arms in this tournament. VerHagen isn't just a spare part though, he has the team's best ERA among starters @ 3.63 and he has started six games this season as a JUCO transfer. He has a .246 BAA. Alex Wood, UGA's ace, will open for the Bulldogs. Wood pitched the opener in a three game series against Vandy during the regular season, but left after 4+ scoreless innings due to a rain delay. UGA won that one 1-0, but then lost the next two. We're looking at two evenly matched teams as the line suggests. UGA with a team BA about eleven points higher, but the Commodores scoring 27 more runs. Both like to run on the basepaths with Vandy ranked 3rd in stolen bases and UGA 4th. Both pitching staffs are a little iffy with UGA @ 3.87 and Vanderbilt @ 4.06. This Georgia club has to feel a little pressure again heading into the tournament and they did not play very well on the road, while Vanderbilt should be full of confidence especially considering they rallied late twice against the Bulldogs for their two wins.

    May 23rd: [PARLAY] Florida State + Texas A&M [-117]
Florida State is the top seed in the ACC Tournament and draws Georgia Tech to open. FSU swept the Yellow Jackets in a three game series on the road in the regular season. The ACC sets their tournament up differently, going with pool play instead of brackets. FSU has Ga.Tech, Clemson and Virginia in their pool and will expect to win it and play for the Championship. Georgia Tech can score runs, they ranked 4th in the ACC and have a .294 avg. FSU scored 22 more runs, but had a lower BA. Pitching is where Ga.Tech struggles with a 4.40 team ERA compared to FSU which is almost a run lower. Tech is capable of winning, but has not fared well against the top ACC teams. A&M opens with Kansas. A&M ranks 1st in ERA in the Big 12 and faces a Kansas team with just a .248 BA. A&M's avg stands at .293. The Aggies seek a national seed and have won this tournament a couple years in a row. Overall, they are the better rounded team and should prove it.

Wolfpack get the edge here with their offense. Miami is without their best position player still in Peter O'Brien from everything I see. He is recovering from a fractured wrist and leaves a hole in the Miami lineup. Canes had the 2nd worst BA in the ACC and scored the 3rd fewest runs. NC State ranked 2nd in BA and third in runs scored. Their pitching while young at its best, can compete with Miami's top notch staff - giving their offense to be the difference.

May 23rd [SEC Tournament]: Vanderbilt +125
Riding the hot team with the Commodores as they take on SEC East Champ and defending National Champ, South Carolina. The Gamecocks though come in lamenting perhaps what could have been as they blew the top seed in the tournament by losing two of three at home to LSU and three of their last four overall. As with most teams playing first up, SC will protect its best arms by starting freshman lefty Jordan Montgomery who has been dropped from the rotation due to some struggles. He was 4-1 with a lofty 4.42 ERA. Vandy counters with T.J. Pecoraro who threw a CG shutout against Ole Miss last time out, propelling Vandy to a 3-0 win. The teams are about dead even stats-wise in BA and runs scored, while Vandy possesses a more lethal base running threat. SC definitely has the pitching edge with a better bullpen overall, but the starters could be key tonight. Vandy has won eight of their last nine overall and may be eager to make up for losing two of three to SC during the regular season with one of the losses in extra innings. Momentum has proven to be a good ride in the SEC for Mississippi State and Vanderbilt in the opener, let's see if it rolls another game.

Work got me buried today from making a play on Auburn also which would have made for a real good day. 2-1 still works. Parlay failed with FSU losing, but NC State rallied in the 9th to win 3-2 and Vandy wins by the same score. Ready to rock it again tomorrow. Love this time of year.

May 24th [PARLAY] Oklahoma State [Big 12] + Virginia [ACC] +119
Kansas State sports the worst pitching the conference with a 5.42 ERA on the season. They were bashed 10-4 by A&M yesterday, while Okie State lost 1-0 to OU on a walkoff HR. OSU sports the Big 12's second best team ERA @ 3.01. K-State has a bit of an edge offensively, hitting .281 while OSU hits .267 and has scored 53 more runs. Still, K-State has too many issues stopping the opposition as OSU showed when they swept K-State on the road, outscoring the Wildcats 27-8 in those three games. Early start @ 10am ET. Virginia gets Clemson to start, a team they swept in the regular season. Virginia has the best BA in the ACC and a bit better pitching staff. Expect them to start strong today and take care of business.

May 24th [ACC Tournament] Miami +230
The Hurricanes look to claim their first win in pool play against North Carolina. The Canes blew a 2-1 lead in the 9th yesterday, so it will be interesting to see if their psyches are intact. UNC had no issues clobbering Wake Forest, 6-0. Miami should have some confidence here as they swept the season series from UNC and shut out the Heels twice. That includes the game by today's starter, Stephen Ewing. Ewing was wild with seven walks, but whiffed nine to limit UNC in a 3-0 win. Kent Emanuel goes for UNC. He was touched for ten hits and four runs in an 8-0 loss to Miami in that series. Emanuel has been their best pitcher all season though with a 1.80 ERA and 8-3 mark. Ewing is 5-2 with a 3.38 ERA. Miami has had UNC's number in the past few seasons, winning nine of the last ten meetings including a win in last year's ACC Tournament. The Canes have to win with pitching. Their offense ranks near the bottom of the ACC, while UNC's was adequate finishing around the middle of the pack in most categories. These are the two top pitching staffs in the ACC. A big help for Miami would be limiting errors after leading the ACC with 91 this season. The Canes don't win pretty and are still without their best weapon in Peter O'Brien who is out with a wrist injury. Still, they limited a powerful NC State offense yesterday and had themselves in position to win. If Ewing gives them a quality start, they'll need to scratch out a few runs and try to hold on late. Even with UNC on a 14 game winning streak [most of which was against the bottom of the ACC] - something in this one feels like it will be close and potentially, Miami will have a crack at winning.

    May 24th [Big 12 Tournament] Oklahoma +125
The Sooners will have plenty of confidence on their side as they meet top seed Baylor today. OU swept Baylor in the regular season, handing the Bears their first three conference losses of the season. Both teams won their openers. OU in walkoff fashion with a solo homerun to beat Oklahoma State, 1-0. Baylor had an easier time with Kansas State, winning 11-1. Baylor sports the best hitting team in the conference @ .314 with 365 runs scored. OU is batting just .267 with 294 runs scored. OU is a solid small ball club, ranking 2nd in the Big 12 with 63 sacrifices - but also have power with 29 HRs, ranking 2nd to Baylor's 36. The pitching staffs are about even. Jordan John goes for OU, he went 8.2 IP against Baylor without allowing a run. Trent Blank goes for Baylor, He opposed John and gave up just two runs in 8 IP. OU used the sweep over Baylor to propel themselves to this point. Baylor lost four of six down the stretch and showed that solid pitching could indeed hold them down. Teams won't outbash the Bears. Of their eleven losses, seven saw them held to three runs or less. OU held them to zero, one and six runs in the season series while scoring one, two and 12 opposite of them. The formula is clear and the Sooners will know they have done it before and that this game is much more important to Oklahoma. Baylor likely has the #1 natinal seed all but sewn up and is a shoe-on to host a Regional.

May 24th [SEC Tournament]: Vanderbilt +260
Florida throws Hudson Randall (7-1, 2.89 ERA), one of their studs tonight. Sam Selman (8-3, 3.64 ERA) gets the nod for the Commodores. Randall limited Vandy to two runs in one of the three games of a series sweep for Florida over Vandy. That however came back in March before this Vandy squad found itself. Now, they are red hot with wins in nine of their last eleven - including impressive wins @ LSU. Every year, there seems to be a lower seeded team that gets hot and rolls late in this tournament. Mississippi State is vying for this too, but Vanderbilt seems to defy logic some with their ability to win. Try 'em again at big odds.

Well the conference tournaments were good with the dogs. Starting to study the Regionals now. Will probably have some previews up later in the week on the ones I am going to focus on. Hopefully we start getting totals now, but have the feeling they may be sporadic until a game or two is played in each regional.
