The Cincinnati Reds became the first Major League Baseball team to clinch a postseason spot when they defeated the Cubs 5-3 today in Chicago.
The Washington Nationals also can assure themselves of a playoff spot by defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers tonight.
Even if the Reds (91-59) lose all of their 12 remaining games this season, they will get into the playoffs as either the National League Central division champion or as one of the league’s two wild cards.
The Reds are playing without manager Dusty Baker, 63, who has missed the past two games and will remain hospitalized in Chicago until at least tomorrow after being diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat.
