Rockies at Padres - Labor Day

    Rockies-Padres: Over

    By: Tom Freese

Though San Diego isn't a great place for offense, the over is the play today in the Rockies-Padres contest.

We like a high scoring game here as Colorado starter Josh Fogg has allowed 19 runs in his last three starts in just 11 innings of work.

Fogg has allowed 10 runs in 16 innings of work against the Padres this year. Woody Williams, San Diego's starting pitchers, has struggled against the Rockies allowing 21 runs in his last 3 starts against them in just nine innings of work.

    Play: Over

    Rockies-Padres: Under 8.5

Bucking Stats & Taking The Under

Sometimes the individual stats say one thing but the bottom line stats say another. This is one of those times as the pitchers in the Rockies-Padres game point to the over but the overall trend says to play the under.

Woody Williams (7-5, 3.85 ERA) toes the rubber tonight for San Diego. The right-hander gave up five runs on a season-high 11 hits in five innings of a 7-4 loss at Arizona last Monday. Williams had won his three starts prior to that, posting a 2.49 ERA over that span.

In 14 career starts against the Rockies, Williams is 3-4 with an 8.06 ERA -- his worst ERA against any team. His only start against Colorado in 2006 came on July 27 when he was tagged for a season-high six runs on eight hits in four innings of San Diego's 9-8 loss in 10 innings.

Josh Fogg will top the hill for Colorado tonight. The right-hander gave up six runs on nine hits in four innings in that July 27 game against the Padres. Fogg (9-9, 5.36 ERA) allowed eight runs in just 1 1-3 innings of Wednesday's 11-3 loss to the New York Mets.

In five career starts against San Diego, Fogg is 2-1 with a 5.06 ERA. He has faced them three times this season, going 1-0 with a 5.51 ERA.

The bottom line is despite the struggles each starting pitcher has had in their career versus their opponent tonight, we still look for this game to go under. The under is 22-8-4 in San Diego's last 34 games overall and 12-2-1 in their last 15 games following a win.

    Play: Under 8½
