    Yu Darvish a Ranger

Commissioner's Office has now confirmed that Texas Rangers have won the bidding on Yu Darvish at $51.7m...now have 30 days to negotiate.

Who the hell is this guy?

Heard of him but don't know much about him. Dominated the Japan league but who cares. Thought the red sox were going to post up on him but we know what happened the last time they did that.

Stupid to post up on a guy who is totally unproven

Darvish a 2-time all star, 2-time MVP, 2-time Gold Glove winner..93-38 with ERA of 1.99 over 7 seasons...great hip rotation and whip arm spd
Darvish has stuff to be true #1...Hollywood persona...has posed nude in women's magaiznes going thru very public divorce with actress wife
TX has 30-days to sign Darvish...rotation will look like: Darvish, Holland, Feliz, Harrison, Lewis...with Ogando to bullpen w/Adams/Nathan
Darvish becomes highest financial risk....highest baseball reward in baseball history

    All coming from ESPN's Bowden

I'm guessing he'll be good for the length of a 4 or 5 year contract. CJ Wilson good.

As a Jays fan this makes me sad. Not just that we didn't get him, but that it would have been the signal that the ownership was opening up their wallets.

That's $50 Million to talk to him....probably another $50-70 million to sign him. The Red Sox paid around the same amount to talk to Dice-K and around another $60 million to sign him. The "talk" money goes to the Japanese Club he was signed with...it's straight cash homie...in their pockets. With a few exceptions, the Japanese players have been over-hyped, and over-paid

They don't pay the post up if they don't sign him correct?

Could they just be blocking someone else?

Rangers could have had Prince Fielder for similar overall price (posting fee + salary)...now looks like Cubs, Mariners or Mystery team WSH?

Hideki Irabu was nicknamed the "Japanese Nolan Ryan" because he supposedly threw 98, but came to the US and flamed out....George Steinbrenner called him a "fat toad" after he tubed as a Yankee. Japanese pitchers are finesse pitchers for the most part....flamethrowers are their style. Not sure throwing $120 Million at him is smart when you could of given it to a known commodity in CJ Wilson

    Just for one year right?

As for fielder the posting fee doesn't go toward the lux tax....though I don't now where Texas falls with payroll...nah prob not an issue I guess.

If I recall correctly: posting fee does not count toward luxury tax. Posting is weird too, if he doesn't sign and goes back to Japan he wouldn't be posting again next year. I believe it's the year after.

He's making 6M+ salary in Japan, not including endorsements. Dude's not going to settle for peanuts, no matter how badly he wants to play here.

New ownership group bought in last year, and a new major TV deal starting this year.

He's Japans' best pitcher. He's actually got a pretty good stuff. At the international level he's probably one of the best out there. But at the MLB level who really knows. You can think of him as the Greg Maddux of Japan but with actually much better velocity. Has one of the best commands with the baseball. I would honestly say if any japanese player is worth the risk I would say Yu Darvish has the best chance to be a player in the MLB.I don't know if it's worth spending that much money but he's probably going to be the best prospect coming out of japan, ever. Performing at MLB level is a different story. He's shown he's lights out in the international level.. We'll have to see at the MLB level.

He isn't built anything like your average Japanese pitcher. Comparisons to Dice-K are completely ridiculous. Kid has potential to be great.

    Damn straight.

Nolan Ryan was done with CJ. Never even seriously considered bringing him back. I have a ton of faith in Nolan. If he believes that Darvish is the real deal........then I'm 100% on board.

Here's an interesting article on Yarvish....Personally I think $120 million for a Japanese pitcher, $50 million plus the $70 million he's seeking is risky for the Rangers. I think the Red Sox and Yankees are gun shy after being burned before...Darvish is 6' 5" so he's definitely a more imposing figure on the mound.
