Mariners trade for Ben Broussard and designated Carl Everett

I see the Mariners have designated your boy Everett, Dan. No real surprise, since we always talk how this guy is pretty much a automatic out durning the Mariner games.

CLEVELAND -- The Seattle Mariners acquired first baseman Ben Broussard from the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday for minor-league outfielder Shin-Soo Choo.

It's the second deal the two clubs have made in a month and sends another Cleveland first baseman to the Mariners.

Seattle, in last place in the AL West but only 3½ games behind the division-leading Los Angeles Angels, got first baseman Eduardo Perez in a deal for minor-league infielder Asbrudal Cabrera on June 30.

The Mariners also designated DH Carl Everett for assignment on Wednesday.

Broussard hit .321 with 13 home runs and 46 RBI in 88 games with the Indians but was spotty defensively and committed seven errors.

Cleveland will send cash to the Mariners to cover a portion of Broussard's salary. The Indians will receive a player to be named by Aug. 31 to complete the deal.

Broussard and Perez started the season in a platoon at first base for Cleveland, which has underachieved following a 93-win season in 2005.

Indians general manager Mark Shapiro, who dealt closer Bob Wickman to Atlanta last week for a minor-league catcher, said six teams were interested in Broussard.

"He was having a great year. Benny is a guy who's always had streaks where he showed potential," Shapiro said. "I still think Benny's potential is even greater."

Choo has spent most of this season at Triple-A Tacoma, where he hit .323 with 13 home runs and 48 RBI. He played in four games for Seattle between July 3-13, going 1-for-11.

The lefty hitter will join the Indians immediately and start in right field against right-handed pitching. He will also spend some time in left field, Shapiro said.

"This player is a good complement to this club and the club we hope to build in the future," Shapiro said. "This is a guy who has hit every single place he's been."

Choo stole 26 bases in 30 attempts at Tacoma and was picked for the Pacific Coast League's All-Star team. He was a member of Korea's provisional roster for the World Baseball Classic in March.

"Over time, he certainly has the athleticism, speed and the arm to be an above average corner outfielder," Shapiro said.

Casey Blake, who has been playing right field for the Indians this season, and catcher Victor Martinez will split time at first.

The Mariners now have three first basemen on their roster in Richie Sexson, Broussard and Perez, who is hitting .294 with a home run and five RBI in 17 at-bats since joining Seattle.

Seattle will travel to Cleveland to open a three-game series with the Indians on Friday night.

"We hope [Broussard] goes on after the next three games to do good things," Shapiro joked.

    More on Carl Everett.

I find it to be a good move by the Mariners. When he is due up in any inning, its like you start out with a out right off the bat, only getting 2 outs in that inning.

Mariners designate DH Everett for assignment

SEATTLE -- Carl Everett has left Seattle -- almost without a trace.

The Mariners designated Everett for assignment Wednesday, making Seattle the 35-year-old's eighth former team. The team recalled outfielder Chris Snelling from Triple-A Tacoma to take Everett's roster spot.

Snelling, 23, was expected to be in uniform for Wednesday night's home game against Toronto.

Seattle has 10 days to trade or release Everett, a switch-hitting designated hitter who was batting .227 with 11 home runs and 33 RBI in 92 games. He signed a one-year contract last December to add power to an anemic Mariners lineup. Last season, he won the World Series as the Chicago White Sox's DH.

Everett's Seattle deal pays him $3.4 million for this season. The Mariners had a $600,000 buyout option on the contract for 2007.

The Mariners entered Wednesday four games under .500 -- yet just three games out of the AL West lead.

"Our primary focus is to win games right now," general manager Bill Bavasi said. "We are a better team today with Eddie Perez, Greg Dobbs and [Snelling] getting more at-bats in the DH spot."

Over the season's first half, Everett was engaging in the clubhouse and in the community. But on the field, he batted .159 against left-handers. That led to manager Mike Hargrove benching Everett against left-handed starters and to Bavasi acquiring Perez from Cleveland on June 30.

Since then, Perez has been Seattle's DH against lefties.

Finally, after a July 4 game, Everett and Hargrove had a shouting match about the veteran's reduced role inside the manager's office.

"It's just part of the job, part of the business. None of this stuff surprises me," Hargrove said then.

When a team representative approached Everett on July 5 to get a comment on the argument, Everett said, "Tell them it's none of their business."

Since then, Everett has said little. On the field, he was 3-for-14 (.214) in four games in his last week as a Mariner.

Snelling, who played 23 games for Seattle in 2002 and '05, was batting .247 with four home runs and 34 RBI in 52 games with Tacoma. He began the season on the disabled list after surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left knee. He did not begin playing until May 20.

Yep looker... I knew it was just a matter of time before the M's dumped Carl Everett in some fashion.
