    MLB Trivia - 6/21/06

According to my research only 10 pitchers (since 1900) have earned the win in a 1-0 game and hit a homer for the game's only run. I'll give y'all the first one since it happened long ago in a time period TGO always claimed 'never happened.'

03 Aug 1906 --- TJ 'Tom' Hughes tosses all 10 innings in Washington's 1-0 win over St. Louis, hitting a home run in the top of the 10th off Browns pitcher Fred Glade to account for the game's only run.

Not all of the remaining nine tossed complete game shutouts. Some left before the ninth inning, and one of them accomplished this feat in relief. How many of the remaining nine can you name?

Not Crazy Carlos, though I could see him doing that before it's all over.

Let's see, the remaining nine are from the following teams:
    Yankees (2 x)
    White Sox
    Orioles
    Reds
    Phillies
    Cubs
    Dodgers (2x)

It's happened just once in the last 22+ seasons. Happened twice in 1962. Three of the nine pitchers are in the Hall of Fame.

Not Koufax, though one of the Dodgers was a left-hander.

OK well lets go with the greatest all around baseball player ever..Babe Ruth. Surely in those 100 wins or so that he had he knocked one in and won 1-0.

    Good guess, but incorrect.

    Here are the seasons that it happened...1932, 1938, 1959, 1962 (twice), 1965, 1971, 1983, 2002.

Nope, not Fernando. But a Dodgers teammate of Fernando's was the one who did it in 1983.

How about this: One of the pitchers to do this went on to a career in politics.

    Good answers, Dan and Owned...

We have four of the 10 now, counting the very first to do so (# to left of pitcher represents a chronological order to this feat).

    1. Tom Hughes (Thomas J.): Aug 3, 1906. First pitcher to do it, hits homer in 10th off St. Louis Browns pitcher Fred Glad to give Washington a 1-0 win.

    7. Jim Bunning: May 5, 1965. Bunning tosses a 4-hit shutout, homering off New York’s Warren Spahn in a 1-0 win for the Phils over the Mets..

    9. Bob Welch: June 17, 1983. Welch scatters six hits and homers off Mario Soto in the bottom of the 6th to give the Dodgers a 1-0 win over the Reds.

    10. Odalis Perez: Aug 28, 2002. Perez homers in the 5th inning off Rick Helling and the Dodgers win 1-0 over the Diamondbacks. Erci Gagne pitches the 9th for LA, picking up his 45th save of the season.

Gee, thanks for reminding me that I've been around so long

Last Hint: The remaining six to do this had the following initials (using the nicknames they were most widely known by in a couple of instances)...RR, SC, EW, MP, JK and JP

The SC was not Lefty in 1971.

Complete list of pitchers who have been credited with the win in 1-0 games and also homered for the only run of the contest...

    1. Tom Hughes (Thomas J.): Aug 3, 1906. First pitcher to do it, hits homer in 10th off St. Louis Browns pitcher Fred Glade and goes distance on mound to give Washington a 1-0 win.

    2. Red Ruffing: Aug 13, 1932. Ruffing homers in the top of the 10th off Washington’s Tommy Thomas to pitch and hit the Yankees to a 1-0 win.

    3. Spud Chandler: May 21, 1938. Belts a homer in the 8th off Chicago’s Thornton Lee to pitch and hit the Yankees to a 1-0 win.

    4. Early Wynn: May 1, 1959. Wynn goes deep in the 8th off Boston’s Tom Brewer in the White Sox’ 1-0 win over the Red Sox.

    5. Milt Pappas: April 18, 1962. Pappas pitches the first six innings of Baltimore’s 1-0 win over the Yankees, hitting a homer in the fifth off New York’s Bill Stafford for the game’s only run.

    6. Johnny Klippstein: Aug 6, 1962. Klippstein homers in the 13th off Houston’s Don McMahon and pitches final three innings (in relief offor Bob Purkey) of Cincinnati’s 1-0 win.

    7. Jim Bunning: May 5, 1965. Bunning tosses a 4-hit shutout, homering off New York’s Warren Spahn in a 1-0 win for the Phils over the Mets.

    8. Juan Pizzaro: Sept 16, 1971. Pizarro knocks a Tom Seaver pitch over the fence in the 8th to pitch and hit the Cubs past the Mets, 1-0.

Eric Gagne is the pitcher for LA in the 9th, picking up his 45th save of the season.

Not sure that's one you can Google, Danny Boy. That comes from a ton of research that one of my acquaintances has put into stuff like this. Dude is a walking frickin' baseball encyclopedia.

I remember last year watching the Giants/Brewers game and Brad Hennessy hit a 2 out 3-run homer and the final score of the game was 3-0 so that is kind of close....

    Ok Willie,

I don't know the answer to this, but it has to be out there somewhere today.

How many pitchers have lost a 1-0 game, pitching a 1 hitter, with the lone hit being a home run?

It happened last night to the Cardinals and it also happened last year when Freddy Garcia threw a one hitter and lost to the Twins. I would love to know the exact answer though.
