June 19, 2006

DETROIT: With his win on Sunday, the 200th in his career, LHP Kenny Rogers (10-3) became the fastest Tigers pitcher to reach 10 wins in 22 years. Jack Morris won 10 games by May 28 and Dan Petry won 10 by June 15 in 1984. ... The first-inning home runs Sunday by Curtis Granderson, Carlos Guillen and Chris Shelton were the most by the Tigers in the first inning since Lou Whitaker, Cecil Fielder and Rob Deer all hit first-inning homers on May 26, 1991. ... Tigers manager Jim Leyland said the team is keeping an eye on hard-throwing 23-year-old prospect Humberto Sanchez, who is 3-0 with a 0.47 ERA in three starts at Triple-A Toledo. Sanchez struck out 86 batters in 71 2-3 innings at Double-A Erie before his June 8 promotion. ``It's not going unnoticed up here,'' Leyland said.

MILWAUKEE: RHP Rick Helling, out since mid-April with a sprained elbow, will make his first start Tuesday night against the Tigers. He went 1-0 with a 3.75 ERA in two rehab starts at Triple-A Nashville. The Brewers have yet to make a roster move to make room for Helling, although a pitcher is likely to be sent down when Helling is activated from the 60-day DL. Helling will become the 11th different pitcher to start for the Brewers this year.

CHICAGO: Coming off an 0-6 homestand, manager Dusty Baker held a team meeting before Monday night's game in Cleveland. He would not go into details, saying, ``We've had too many meetings. I would rather not have them.'' Baker believes his injury-riddled team, 26-42 entering play Monday, is not underachieving. ``If they were, I would tell them,'' he said. ``They've played hard. They haven't quit.'' ... Baker said RHP Mark Prior, who allowed eight runs and four homers in 3 2-3 innings in his season debut Sunday against Detroit, will make his next scheduled start in Minnesota. Prior, who had been sidelined by a sore shoulder, allowed three homers in the first inning. ``He said he felt OK, he just wasn't pitching the way he wanted,'' Baker said. ... RHP Kerry Wood (shoulder) will throw a simulated game Tuesday. ... Baker was disappointed heavy rains canceled outdoor batting practice. ``I wish we had taken the field,'' he said. ``A lot of our guys have never played here.''

CLEVELAND: OF Jason Michaels, out since spraining his right ankle Thursday, could be headed to the DL. ``He's a little better, but not much,'' manager Eric Wedge said. Michaels had an MRI exam and was looked at by a team doctor Monday afternoon. ... SS Jhonny Peralta was back in the No. 3 spot in the order after being moved down for 10 games and hitting .325 (13-for-40) during that time. That followed a stretch when he hit only .181 (17-for-94). ... Cleveland hit only .247 and scored 35 runs over its last nine games. The Indians are hitting .262 in June after batting .302 in April and .276 in May.

RHP Octavio Dotel, who had elbow ligament replacement surgery a year ago, will throw in Trenton on Thursday, though not necessarily in a game for the Double-A Thunder. ... Kyle Farnsworth (back spasms) also was ready to pitch. ... LHP Randy Johnson probably will drop his appeal of a five-game suspension for throwing at a batter last week and should miss his next start.

RHP Jon Lieber, on the DL since May 30 with a strained left groin, is heading to Florida for a rehab assignment. Lieber probably is more than a week away from returning. ... With days off on Thursday and next Monday, the Phillies could skip fifth starter Scott Mathieson's turn. Manager Charlie Manuel said he's had discussions with pitching coach Rich Dubee, but hasn't made a decision yet. ... Lefty-hitting Ryan Howard and Bobby Abreu were out of the lineup against lefty Randy Johnson. Chase Utley was the only left-handed hitter to start, moving from second base to play first for Howard. ... LHP Randy Wolf will make his next rehab start for Double-A Reading on Wednesday. Wolf had elbow surgery last July 1.

OAKLAND: The A's agreed to terms with free agent LHP Scott Sauerbeck. Sauerbeck was 0-1 with a 6.23 ERA in 24 relief appearances for Cleveland before being released on June 16. ``It was a good fit,'' Sauerbeck said. ``This is a first-place team with Jason Kendall, a guy I played a few games with in Pittsburgh.'' ... Manager Ken Macha hinted that the acquisition of Sauerbeck could bring a player move for the weekend series with San Francisco. ... OF Milton Bradley's sore right shoulder could keep him out of the lineup for at least two games. ``He hit off a tee right-handed for a while and some left-handed.'' Macha said. ``He's needs an extra day.''

COLORADO: OF Ryan Spilborghs got a rare start in center with a right-hander throwing. ``We wanted to give Cory Sullivan an injury day off,'' manager Clint Hurdle said. ``The right thumb is sore.'' ... 1B Todd Helton, 4-for-12 in the three-game series in St. Louis, took early batting practice. ... Hurdle said RHP Byung-Hyun Kim wasn't in danger of losing his spot in the rotation after three winless starts. ``We don't have anyone knocking down the door in the minors to get here,'' Hurdle said. ``They've been all right at Triple A. We have guys here that are all right.''

ARIZONA: Starting Tuesday, Arizona will play only the second series in club history against Tampa Bay, the majors' other 1998 expansion franchise. Tampa Bay swept a three-game series between the teams in 2004. ... The Diamondbacks have lost their last seven road games against AL clubs. ... OF Scott Hairston, recalled from Triple-A Tucson on Monday, reached base in four of his five plate appearances in a 5-4 victory over Pittsburgh with a double, single, a walk and an infield error. But he left the game in the 10th with a sore shoulder after running into the left-field wall trying to catch Ronny Paulino's double, and manager Bob Melvin wasn't certain if he could play Tuesday.

PITTSBURGH: LHP Zach Duke has won his last three decisions, but has given up 17 hits and nine runs in 10 innings over his last two starts. Duke pitched three scoreless innings Monday against Arizona, then lost his control while walking three in a four-run fourth inning. Manager Jim Tracy said he went off kilter a little bit with his mechanics. ... OF Jason Bay has 20 homers, making him the first Pirates player since Brian Giles (22) in 2002 to have that many before the All-Star break.

CINCINNATI: INF Rich Aurilia (sore right biceps) didn't start but probably was available to pinch hit. Aurilia played catch with a trainer before the game and was scheduled to do so again Tuesday. ... RHP Matt Belisle (sore lower back) is slated to pitch Tuesday and Wednesday for Double-A Chattanooga as part of his rehab assignment. ... Reds manager Jerry Narron on his bullpen: ``I think they've done a much better job than some people give them credit for.'' ... As expected, Cincinnati purchased the contract of RHP Jason Standridge from Triple-A Louisville and designated reliever Rick White for assignment.

NEW YORK: With RF Xavier Nady in the lineup for the first time since his appendectomy on May 30, rookie OF Lastings Milledge did not start. Endy Chavez, who was in LF, has been good enough to deserve playing time, manager Willie Randolph said. Milledge will probably play Tuesday night, Randolph said. ... SS Jose Reyes and 3B David Wright were named co-NL players of the week for June 12-18. Reyes went 13-for-26 with nine runs, five doubles, a triple, three RBIs and three stolen bases. OF Carlos Beltran and C Paul Lo Duca are the others. ... Randolph is happy with Reyes' steady defense, but he thinks the speedy SS could have more range if he anticipated better and focused intently on every pitch.
