Who's the smartest baseball player you've ever seen?

    I'm talking baseball smart.

For me #4 Hall of Famer Paul "The Ignitor" Molitor

Played SS and 2B flawlessly, knew where everybody was on the field and where they were supposed to be.
Terrific when he was at third too.
Played CF and LF flawlessly too, knew what base to go to and never missed a cutoff man.

There wasn't many smarter hitters as well.

Chipper Jones is crazy baseball smart...I think a lot of catchers really deserve to be mentioned in this discussion.

Muts fan here and Yankee hater #1, but I have to give Jeter a nod. Need to think on the subject some more, but he came to mind.

Maddux and Alomar were smart players.

On the opposite end of the scale, Corey Patterson.

Mike, I was going to say the same thing. But Maddux might have the most "baseball smart" I've ever seen in a player?

    Moose too.
Mike Mussina is one of my all time favorites.
On the field and off, a genius.

Got like 4.1 Gpa from Stanford in 3 1/2 years (I still don't know how you can get a 4.1 when 4.0 is considered perfect)

    So baseball smart Moose was.
One scout said, "if Mussina walked you, it was by design, on purpose."

Kept to himself, somebody once said about Moose "he could explain it to you, but it'll just go over your head"

He's got sweet gig now, he's on the Little League Board of Directors - International

I would have to say Maddux. He new the batter's thoughts before they came about.

Interesting facts about Mussina. Never new all that about him. Now I want to go read about him

Surprised that so many people think that Pitchers are baseball's brightest...it's got to be catchers and shortstops

    John Lackey

He tricked a billionaire owner, and sharp GM in the BoSox into giving him $82 million

At least Lackey may still give them something. Bobby Bonilla has been out of MLB for a few years now and the NYM are paying him millions over the next 10 for nothing!!

My opinion I would say Glavine. i loved him as a player and hated seeing him in New york. He has a great BB mind as well as Maddux and Chipper

brad ausmus. there is no reason he should have still been playing baseball for well over a decade except pitcher LOVED to pitch to him with the way he called a game.

Gotta say Greg Maddux definitely and even throw Tommy Glavine in there. Baseball smart and saavy veterans for sure.

Also like Al Leiter and Orel Hershiser to be in this discussion....especially the "bulldog". He was very intelligent.

Catchers....I'd have to say Mike Scossia and Joe Girardi. Jorge Posada is also pretty intelligent.

Jeter and John Olerud get my nod as far as infielders go.
