    Astros Daily Plus..

    Record and Opinions Listed Below

    7/16 Astros Daily

    Astros vs. Pirates
    * Astros/Pirates Under the Total 7.5 -120

    Overview
Astros Bud Norris will be on the mound with a 2.66 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and continues to pitch very well at home. Additionally, Norris beat the Pirates by 8-2 on July 6th yielding two runs through 7 quality innings in Pittsburgh.

The Pirates SP is Maholm with a 2.96 ERA and 1.28 WHIP. On July 4th Maholm allowed just one earned run and 5 hits in a 5-3 win over the Astros. As of late, Maholm has pitched very well going 3-1 with a 1.73 ERA. Maholm is 1-0 vs. Astros with an ERA of 1.38.

The issue to consider when taking an under with the Astros is their weak bullpen once Norris steps out at the end of the 7th.
The last time these two pitchers played each other resulted in a 3-2 game. Statistically this game should be low scoring and fall short of 7.5 total runs.

    7/16 Plus Plays

    *Phillies ML -145 Hamels
The surprise as of late with the Phillies is the improved run support. The Phillies have won 7 of 10 from the Mets hitting .280 this season. Hamels has received 14 runs of support in his last two starts winning both games. Hamels is 5-1 on the road with a 2.20 ERA. Overlooking the road favorite spot here and expecting another solid performance from the mound.

Back this afternoon on this thread…

Thanks, Pitt should win as well , it was a difficult call for the post because Minute Maid is a hitters park. Not to mention, the Pirates have several hitters with solid averages against Norris, including Andrew McCutchen (.318), Garrett Jones (.316) and Neil Walker (.333). Also Hunter Pence has Maholm's number.

    Astros vs. Pirates

    Over 7

Both pitchers struggling as of late; Correia is 3-3 with a 5.18 ERA over his last seven starts with no record vs. the Astros. Wandy Rodriguez is 6-6, 3.52, who has also experienced some difficulties in his last game. Wandy has been solid for Houston despite his last game and should fare better in this match up if he can receive the same run support as Norris. As we stated yesterday, Minute Maid is a hitter’s park and the Astros bullpen has been a problem in late innings.

    Astros vs. Nationals

    *Over 8

    Notes and Stats

The Nationals gave the Braves a handful in Atlanta against a pitching staff that has the second best ERA 3.12 and second best WHIP 1.197. Although, the Nationals are a streaky team they should find themselves in a much easier position vs. the Astros, not to mention run friendly Minute Maid Park.

Astros twenty year old rookie pitcher Jordon Lyles has started in eight games and is winless. Lyles 0-4 has a 4.60 ERA with 1.38 WHIP and has only pitched past the 6th inning twice. The Astros bullpen has consistently failed to keep the runs down so if Lyles leaves after the 6th or earlier expect problems if history serves. Lyles over the past 3 starts and 17 innings pitched has given up 20 hits and 10 runs. To Lyles credit he pitched an excellent game vs. Boston 1-2 final.

Marquis has gone 0-2 over his last five starts with a 5.26 ERA. Additionally, Marquis gave up 15 earned runs over his last 25.2 innings. In July, the Nationals have called upon their relievers for 124 innings which is tied for the third-most in the majors for the month.

The opinion is Marquis and Lyles will give up runs but the Astros won’t win the race. Over 8 seem to be reasonable considering Astros RF/RA 3.9/5.0 and past o/u results- Lyle last 4 starts O/U 3-1.

*Braves (Lowe) / Colorado (Hammel) Over 9.5

Hammel has struggled against the Braves, in 4 starts he’s 0-2 with a 9.53 ERA.
    5.53 ERA at Coors Field.
Hamel’s past performances vs. Atlanta 3-0 Over the total.

Lowe is 10-8 vs Colorado since 97’ with an ERA of 4.40 and 1.35 WHIP
Last 3 starts ERA 4.15 and 1.443 WHIP
Lowe’s starts vs. Colorado 2-1 Over the total

    Astros vs. Nationals

    *Nationals ML

    Notes and Stats

Astros twenty year old rookie pitcher Jordon Lyles gave the Nationals one hell of a game in an excellent 8.1 inning outing. After his exit and a standing O from the crowd the trusty relievers came in and gave up 3 for the loss as usual. The downhill spiral continues with Astros’ pitching Happ today who is 3-11 with an ERA of 5.76. In the last three games he is 0-2 with an ERA 7.79. No long write up with a bunch of stats is necessary today.

The ML is steep at -150 for the Nationals pitching Zimmerman who has an ERA of 1.77 in his last three games. As far as the O/U 7.5; Happ this season 12-6 O/U and in his past three 2-1 O/U. Zimmerman is 8-10 O/U and 1-2 O/U recent 3 games. Obviously, the Nats would have to carry the majority of the load for it to go over; likely. If it wasn’t for poor base running last night the over would have had a chance, but instead fell short 5-2.

    7/19 Plus Plays

*Red Sox / Orioles Over the Total 9.5

Series opener 25 runs on 28 hits
Boston’s Weiland gave up 6 ERs in 4 innings vs. Baltimore on 7/10 in an 8-6 win.
Baltimore’s Guthrie’s is 8-0 O/U to the over in his last home starts.
Weather: 81F and a slight chance of showers isolated.

    7/20 Astros Daily

    Astros vs. Nationals

*Nationals Team Total Over 3.5 -130

    Notes and Stats

This series has rendered common sense and stats worthless. Game 1, Astros’ rookie Jordon Lyles pitches a two hit ball game with the finesse of Verlander. In Game 2, National’s Zimmerman with an ERA under 2.0 threw the Astros batting practice for 6 runs in less than 6 innings. Game three, we have Astros’ Brett Myers, who we have faded successfully since last month, with a home ERA of 5.24 and 1.314 WHIP going 1-6. Myers over his last 3 starts has given up 12 ERs and 22 hits. National’s Hernandez carrying a road ERA of 5.25 and a 1.714 WHIP giving up 14 runs 24 hits in his last three games.

The Line Astros -125 and 8 Under -125

Vegas leans towards the Astros’ Myers with a season high 11 strike outs last game, which is more than double the number of strike outs in any of his previous performances. This season Myers has given up 23 home runs this season. Vegas leans towards the Under at 8 -125. We believe this favored Under counts completely on a total rebound of Hernandez without consideration of how the Astros have been hitting and scoring over the past two days against the Nationals poor pitching. Additionally, Brett Myers shutting down the Nationals offense that’s put up 11 runs in the last two days against more favorable Astros’ pitchers.

Opinion- Can’t ignore the recent surge of offense from the Astros generated in major part by the poor pitching from the Nationals. After watching the last two games, the Nationals have been the better team offensively except for two poor decisions in base running. The opinion for us in this final game has to be on the totals only because we can’t back either of these pitchers.

    Nationals Team Total Over 3.5.

The stats with these two pitchers and teams are well known.
Lean towards Weaver, home edge, and the day game. (Rangers during the day W-L (16-15) / avg. runs 3.5 / batting .240 avg.).
Won’t back Wilson in this situation.

Agree, that was short lived lead last night with the Rangers. Today should be much of the same with Wilson, personal bias.

Ranger’s 5.9 RPG home avg. and Toronto 4.8 RPG avg. The Jays turned it up a notch offensively over the past couple weeks and have been hitting extremely well.

Lewis is 2-4 when starting against the Jays with an ERA of 9.35 and a WHIP of 1.808. Lewis’ home starts have gone Over the Total 8-1 this season. Lewis gave up 6 earned runs (3 of 6 HRs) in 5 innings in his previous start against the Jays.

Reyes over the last three starts has a 5.93 ERA and 1.881 WHIP pitching 17 innings giving up 24 hits and 14 runs. Granted one opponent was the Yankees, but the others were Cleve and Philly. Not quite the Ranger’s offense at Home. Reyes shortest outing came at Arlington allowing six runs in 2 2-3 innings of a 6-7 loss.

In any case, you can stat these games to direct your opinion as everyone is aware. I’m sure some would say Lewis has been turning things around with his last 8 1/3 scoreless innings and the Rangers are coming off the road and back into the heat which needs consideration. Yes, those are valid concerns, but in fairness the Rangers were back in Dallas considerably early yesterday. In preparation for the temperature adjustment, the head coach told Fox Sports Southwest that he plans a late afternoon practice in the heat to acclimate the players.

The Rangers just dropped a couple games and will be anxious to get back to their winning ways. In turn, the Jays have had some very hot bats so this should be fairly high scoring and a good game to watch!

Not liking this pick. Would rather play another over on the board. Nice analysis but will pass on this. Good luck though

Good value tonight in siding with the Rays; 28-20 on the road this season. Coming off tough match-ups at home the Rays offense should fair much better tonight facing KC with Hochevar on the mound.

    Astros ML +110 listed pitchers

    Notes;

Passed on this game yesterday for the same reason I should pass today. Crap games like this have knocked us for 3 senseless losses lately, lesson learned.

Today with Wandy on the mound vs. Wells there is somewhat of an edge for the Astros. Wells is not pitching very well and that’s a friendly understatement compared to articles and blogs written about this guy. I actually read in one article; Wells is hoping to break through his funk Saturday against the Astros.

Chicago’s RHP Wells has only been consistent at one thing and that’s losing. Wells has started nine times and has one win back on April 4th. He is only attributed with 3 loses of the 9 starts. In review of his last 4 of 9 starts, he has ERA in the upper 7s and given up 36 hits, 20 ER, and 8 BB over 22.1 innings.

Astros LHP Wandy Rodriguez is 6-6 with an ERA of 3.67. He is a staple in their rotation and has been good for the Astros considering the team situation. There are talks of possibly trading Wandy according to the Houston Chronicle and other sources.
Rodriguez has had a tough run as of late; last 4 starts he has given up 25 hits, 14 runs, and 13 BB over 23.3 innings. In the previously mentioned starts Rodriguez won one well pitched game against the Rangers on 6/30 (7-0 Final) giving up only 4 hits in 7 innings.

Weather: Rain showers possible with S-SW winds @ 6mph. Humid and hot again upper 90s after the scattered rain.

    Opinion

The Astros have the better guy on the mound today. As far as pitching edges are concerned here, just ask league leading pitchers Halladay and Lee about the Cubs and playing at Wrigley Field when it is hot and humid. Normally, when speaking about the Astros, the poor bullpen would be the topic of discussion, but as of the previous three they have been holding their own (4 ER in 36 1/3 for a .99 ERA). The real problem lies with the offense and their ability to capitalize with men in scoring position. Yesterday they stranded a large number which obviously changed the face of the game.

Wells remaining in his funk, a decent outing from Rodriguez, and improved offensive output could keep the Astros ahead for the win.

Yankees at home and during the day have an excellent record and should pound Hardin. Normally I don’t take run lines but worth it in this spot.

    Possible post later for tonight..

60% is excellent and is a money making record. Don't expect to keep this pace up longterm however I will tail you for now. By the way, excellent pick on the over at the rangers last night. Don't think anyone picked that.

White Sox ML -110 (Jackson) Listed Pitchers

Good value and spot for the White Sox. Line is moving so posting early.

Chicago is 5-1 vs Cleveland and Jackson is 8-1 vs. Indians with 2.80 ERA.

Jackson’s Previous 3 starts 2-1 with 3.27 ERA and 1.18 WHIP allowing only 8 runs. Jackson had an excellent outing on the road shutting out Detroit 5-0. On 4/2 Jackson vs Carrasco, White Sox 8-3. Jackson allowed 2 runs and 5 hits in 6 innings.

Indians Huff is 2-0 against the Sox with an 8.05 and a WHIP of 1.82 according to stats from previous seasons.

    7/24 Astros Daily

    Astros/Cubs

    Pass

    Notes and Stats;

Astros twenty year old rookie pitcher Jordon Lyles has started in nine games and is still looking for that first win. To his credit, Lyles has pitched a couple of excellent games this season. On July 3rd, Lyles faced the Red Sox allowing just 3 hits and one run in a 1-2 loss. On July 18th, facing the Nationals he pitched his longest outing allowing 5 hits, 4 runs (2 of 4 from the bullpen), and 6 Ks. With nothing to gain, the Astros limit his outings to protect his arm. In summary, he keeps the ball low and gets the Ks but has no support. Lyles is a very young pitcher with a bright future in MLB.

Cub’s Garza, 4-7 with an ERA of 3.80, is another pitcher with a record that doesn’t reflect his abilities. Expect Garza to pitch well in most situations, especially today at home and against the Astros. Garza has an ERA of 2.71 and 1.13 WHIP when playing at home.

    Opinion;

If the Astros continue stranding runners in scoring position like I posted yesterday they will never win. If Lyles continues to have a good month this should be an Under game with the Cubs winning.

Weather: Potential thunderstorms with strong winds from the south at 8AM. Winds out bound early, check local weather again before game time.

    7/24 Plus Play Opinions

    *Tampa -110

Started the series with Tampa and they scored four and the rest is history. Like them in the last game pitching Cobb against Paulino. Tampa has a good road record 28-22, but lately their offensive stats have slumped. KC on the other hand has been the complete opposite. Last night KC walked off the victory from the Rays in the 9th as they have done to a couple other teams. Don’t see that happening today and hope I’m right. Tail or Fade the opinion.

Cobb comes into this game on a very positive note allowing only 5 runs and 14 hits in his last three games with a 2.00 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and 12 Ks. No HRs.

*Cleveland (Masterson) vs. CWS (Jackson) Under 7.5 +105

These are good pitchers in what seems to be the right situation for a low scoring game. I have sided with both of these pitchers in different situations during the season with success. If it was any other Indians pitcher I would take the White Sox ML instead of the Under. This seems like a bad opinion but the game should be close and low scoring. Only my opinion so fade or tail.

On 4/2, Jackson vs. Carrasco, White Sox win 8-3. Jackson allowed 2 runs and 5 hits in 6 innings.

    In Masterson’s last 3 starts, he is 2-0 with a 1.88 ERA and .83 WHIP. Last 3 1-2 O/U
Masterson vs. the CWS is 1-2 with all three games going Under the total.

    Weather could be another factor.

    7/24 Late Plus Play

    Rangers RL -105

I’m not a fan of RLs having posted only three in the last 33 games (2-1). Obviously in situations when you have a club like the Rangers with an explosive offense backing up a fairly overpowering pitcher it is worth a shot. In addition, it really helps when the opposing pitcher has a career ERA of 19.29 vs. your opinion.

In the Jay’s (Cecil) last start against the Mariners, he gave up 5 ERs and 9 hits. In his last four starts over 27.1 innings he has surrendered 31 hits, 15 ERs, and 9 BB. On the flip side Ogando (10-3) is on a nice run winning three games. In his last start he shut down the Angels 7-0 in an excellent game on the road. K to BB ratio (86 to 23)

    Note
The only issue with the opinion is Ogando maintaining his consistency. I watched the 3 loses he pitched and it was downhill quick with a lot of runs going the other way (3 straight losses). It seems that he has smoothed things out, especially after watching him at the Angels with the road game win. Your call tail or fade.

How do you like those Astros today? Crazy freaking team.
