Miller High Life to pay taxes for the Jeter 3k hits guy

    http://espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/stor...an-lopez-taxes

Well, it looks as if he will get some help if he needs it. Miller High Life issued a statement Wednesday saying that the company would cover Lopez's tax bill.

"Miller High Life believes you should be rewarded for doing the right thing, not penalized," Miller High Life brand manager Brendan Noonan said in a statement. "We want to recognize Christian Lopez, and in turn everyone like him, for doing the common sense thing and help him continue to live the High Life."

The sporting goods store Modell's also will announce Wednesday afternoon at its Times Square location that five percent of all of its Yankees merchandise sales July 13-19 will be donated to Lopez to help pay the taxes and student loans he's accrued.

Lopez has said he owes $100,000 from his days at St. Lawrence University.

Jeter is a classless individual. If anything else give the kid the ball back if you don't care so he can sell it. Guy has handled this like an amateur.

Jeter has made close to a quarter billion dollars in Yankee salary alone. Not to mention Adidas, Gillette, etc. Fukk him. Writing the kid a 250k check is a drop in the bucket. He wouldn't even know it was gone.

man this makes me want to buy the high life brand, but it tastes like shit. Natural light has a better flavor than the high life. Keystone light is the king of the bottom feeders/cheap beers. I like the German imports when I can get my hands on them, or Michelob light for domestic. I might go buy a 12 pack of the high life to show my support. I'll bring the beer funnel out of retirement, put the song Roxanne on the radio and slam one each time I hear The police say roxanne, or pass out trying. Bringing back to the college memories.

Jetty should have just paid up. 14K to him is nothing, just a mere week of spending money. Glad to see MHL helping the guy out.

Maybe living the "High Life" is what made Lopez made this stupid fukking decision in the first place.

    Just sayin'.

The funny thing is now the IRS will go after him for taxes on the free $14,000 he is getting from Miller to pay this.

If it was from an individual, yes. But corporations don't make gifts and don't file gift tax returns. However, it is probably not also a charitable contribution, so from a corporate tax standpoint, not sure how Miller would have to account for that. Probably not deductible. But that's not Lopez's problem. I believe he can accept those funds without any tax consequences for himself.

How? It's not earned income. The recipient of a gift does not have to pay tax.
