Brook Jacoby will remain as the interim hitting coach even when Jaramillo returns. ... Jaramillo visited with Yankees manager Joe Torre prior to the game. DETROIT: Manager Jim Leyland said 2B Placido Polanco's sore back hasn't landed him on the DL ... yet. ``We can't wait if it keeps going and going eight, 10, 11 days and have him sit,'' Leyland said. ``We would have to put him on the DL but we are not nearly to that point yet. It has been bothering him for quite a while. It is a situation where he could wake up and feel fine.'' His availability for the team's next series against Baltimore is still in question. ``Bending down, it hurts,'' Polanco said. ... SS Carlos Guillen also is a little banged up and their replacements in the starting lineup - Ramon Santiago and Omar Infante - were 0-for-5 with four strikeouts on Sunday.

MINNESOTA: After Sunday's 4-2 win, plenty of Twins were trying to rate CF Torii Hunter's lunging, backhanded catch of a drive by Magglio Ordonez in the fifth inning. ``I don't know if you can do much better than that,'' manager Ron Gardenhire said. Hunter put it in the top three of an impressive list of catches. ``I really rate the pain,'' said Hunter, who tumbled to the ground after the catch. ``It was a long run, too. I lost weight running after that ball.'' ... In a sign of how desperate the Twins are for wins, Gardenhire elected to catch Joe Mauer in a day game after a night game, a rare move. Mauer was 1-for-4 with two strikeouts.

CLEVELAND: RHP Bob Wickman had to be patient before becoming the Indians' career saves leader. Wickman hadn't picked up a save since April 28, but got the 130th of his Cleveland career on Sunday, moving past Doug Jones. ``It's something I can say to my kids one day, you know, somebody's going to beat it, but at one time dad did hold the record,'' said Wickman, who has converted his last 22 chances. ... RHP Rafael Betancourt threw his first bullpen session on Sunday as he recovers from a back injury. Betancourt was placed on the 15-day DL on April 21 after straining his upper back. He threw just his fastball and changeup on Sunday morning in Cleveland and is scheduled for another bullpen session on Tuesday, where he will throw 40 pitches and be allowed to throw breaking balls, Indians trainer Lonnie Soloff said. ... The Indians now have 201 runs this season, the only team in the majors with more than 200.

SEATTLE: SS Yuniesky Betancourt committed his first error of the season in the eighth inning when he mishandled a throw from C Kenji Johjima as Cleveland's Casey Blake attempted to steal second. Betancourt was the last SS in the American League to commit an error. Houston's Adam Everett is the only SS not to make an error this season. Manager Mike Hargrove said Betancourt looked up at the runner before the ball arrived. ... The Mariners were shutout for the fourth time this season on Sunday, tied for the most in baseball with the Twins, Cubs and Pirates. They also haven't homered since May 1. ... LHP Jarrod Washburn has the best ERA on Seattle's staff at 3.61, but while on the mound, Washburn has been given just 14 runs by Seattle's offense in his seven starts. ``I know they are trying,'' Washburn said.

TAMPA BAY: SS Julio Lugo stole second and third in the sixth for his first stolen bags of the year in his third game back after missing 28 games with a strained left abdominal muscle. ... Tyler Walker saved his second game of the series, bouncing back after being on the mound for Saturday's loss. Manager Joe Maddon is eager to see how much better his entire bullpen becomes now that Walker is finding his place in the closer's role. ``I really think before too long it's going to be a strong point on this team,'' the skipper said. ... Jonny Gomes hit a pair of RBI doubles and was greeted by his hometown fans who packed the stands in a section called the ``Gomes Zone.'' The San Francisco native, who grew up about an hour north of Oakland in Petaluma, played back in the Bay Area this weekend for the first time as a major leaguer. Little Leaguers from the teams Gomes sponsors were out in force, and wearing their uniforms. Petaluma held ``Jonny Gomes Day'' on Feb. 11. ... OAKLAND: After debating what to do with RF Milton Bradley for several days, the A's placed him on the 15-day DL because of a strained muscle in his right side. Bradley, who also has been hindered by a sprained right knee, had already missed nine straight games since hurting his knee in a game April 25 at Texas. The move is retroactive to April 27, meaning he would be eligible to come off the DL on Friday for the opener of a weekend series against the Yankees in New York. The A's did not immediately make a corresponding move, but were discussing their options of what to do heading into a six-game road trip starting Tuesday in Toronto. ... Mark Ellis homered to left in the third for his third home run of the year and matched his career high with four hits. Ellis' first three career hits against Hendrickson have been home runs - and Oakland's second baseman needs one more home run to tie Dave Collins' record of 32 homers by a player born in South Dakota. ... HOUSTON: The Astros combined for seven runs in the three-game series. ``I think these guys threw some pretty good games,'' manager Phil Garner said. ``Their guy today (Aaron Cook) threw a pretty good ballgame, using both sides of the plate very well.'' ... Cook never had to face 2B Craig Biggio and OF Preston Wilson, who were out of the starting lineup. Biggio pinch-hit and fanned in the ninth against LHP Brian Fuentes. ... Houston is in the midst of a difficult three-game run that has them playing in three different cities in three days. The Astros played Sunday in Denver, will be in San Francisco on Monday as part of a makeup game for a game rained out on April 12 and then play the Dodgers on Tuesday in Los Angeles. ``At least we don't have to do what San Francisco has to do,'' said Garner. The Giants played in Philadelphia on Sunday night before flying cross country to host the Astros.

COLORADO: RHP Mike DeJean (right shoulder tendinitis) has been shut down for the next five days after experiencing some discomfort in his right shoulder after throwing a simulated game Saturday. ... C Yorvit Torrealba (right shoulder strain) was sent out on a rehab assignment to Tucson. ``It is an open ended assignment with no set time frame,'' manager Clint Hurdle said. ... INF Jamey Carroll started all five games of the homestand. ``And he will continue to start games when we need him to,'' Hurdle said. ``I'll probably use him for a game at shortstop in St. Louis.'' ... I don't need an MRI. I just need it to get stronger.'' ... LOS ANGELES: The Dodgers stole three bases, increasing the major league-leading total to 35 with more than 4 1-2 months remaining in the season. Last year they had just 58 steals. ... RHP Aaron Sele, who beat Milwaukee 10-2 in his National League debut, became the 81st player and 36th pitcher to play for both the Dodgers and Angels. He won a World Series ring in 2002 during the first of his three seasons in Anaheim. ... Closer Eric Gagne, who has yet to pitch this season following elbow surgery on Apr. 7, continued his throwing program over the weekend. ``I'm really encouraged,'' he said. ``It's fun again to look at a baseball and know that you're not going to get hurt when you take it in your hand.''

SAN FRANCISO: Baseball isn't planning a celebration for Barry Bonds if and when he catches Babe Ruth on the career home run list, but the Giants are. ``It'll be somewhat along the lines of what we've done for other milestones,'' executive vice president and chief operating officer Larry Baer said. However, it might not be a lengthy ceremony in the middle of a game. ``I don't think we should be in the business of orchestrating game stoppages,'' Baer said. ... After playing in Philadelphia on Sunday night, the Giants were set to take an overnight, cross-country flight and face Houston ace Roy Oswalt at home Monday night to make up an April 12 rainout. Manager Felipe Alou said Bonds probably won't play against the Astros. LHP Noah Lowry was slated to come off the DL and start for the Giants, who planned to send C Justin Knoedler back to Double-A Connecticut after Sunday night's game.

PHILADELPHIA: Former Phillies closer Billy Wagner added an early spark in his return this week with the New York Mets. He said the Phillies turned against him last year after he criticized the team and often felt like it was ``24 against one.'' ``A lot of that should have stayed in the locker room among the players,'' Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. ... LHP Cole Hamels, a former first-round pick and the organization's top pitching prospect, continues to pitch well for Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre leading to speculation he could soon be in Philadelphia. ``He's pitching great and that's good,'' Manuel said. ``I'm all for anything that will help our club.''
