Most fans criticized the horrible play calling in the playoffs vs the Jets last year, especially in the 4th quarter. Most fans criticized the lack of effort/enthusiasm of the Celtics during the last few weeks. Most fans are criticizing the weak effort from the Sox hitters and bone-headed plays (like Varitek made last night), and that's only 5 games in.

From the NFL's Constitution & Bylaws (article 9): "Any use by any club at any time, from the start to the finish of any game in which such club is a participant, of any communications or information-gathering equipment, other than Polaroid-type cameras or field telephones, shall be prohibited, including without limitation videotape machines, telephone tapping, or bugging devices, or any other form of electronic devices that might aid a team during the playing of a game."

Focus on that last part... "that might aid a team DURING THE PLAYING OF A GAME". If it wasn't used during the game, it wasn't against the rules. The Pats were punished because Belichick essentially ignored a memo from Goodell, specifying where videotaping could take place. Goodell, as any NFL fan knows, rules with an "iron fist". He doesn't mess around, which is why the Pats were penalized
