    Tuesday's MLB Tip Sheet

    **Dodgers (Penny) at Astros (Nieve)**

    –Las Vegas Sports Consultants installed Los Angeles as a $1.25 road ‘chalk’ over Houston, with the total set at 8 ˝ ‘over’ (minus $1.25). This contest is scheduled to begin at 8:05 p.m. ET.

    –Los Angeles pitcher Brad Penny (2-0, 1.88 ERA) is off back-to-back no decisions after opening the season with consecutive victories. The 6-foot-4 hurler tossed six innings against Chicago Wednesday, yielding two runs on nine hits with a walk and seven strikeouts.

    –The Dodgers ended up dropping that affair as a $1.48 home favorite, 5-4, while the combined nine runs went ‘over’ the 7 1/2-run closing total. The ‘under’ had cashed his previous two efforts.

    –Penny, a seven-year veteran, has not started against the Astros the previous few years.

    –Houston hurler Fernando Nieve (0-0, 4.50 ERA) picked up a no-decision April 16 in his first major league start versus Arizona. The rookie right-hander went four innings and was reached for two runs on four hits (one home run) with two walks and four strikeouts.

    –The Astros eventually prevailed as a $1.11 road underdog, 8-5, while the combined 13 runs eclipsed the 9 1/2-run closing total.

    –Nieve appeared in three games this season from the bullpen, going a combined 3 1/3 innings, surrendering two runs on three hits (one home run) with a walk and three strikeouts.

    **Mets (Trachsel) at Giants (Wright)**

    –LVSC opened San Francisco as a $1.15 home favorite over New York, with the total set at 8 ˝. This contest is slated to start at 10:15 p.m. ET.

    –New York’s Steve Trachsel (1-1, 3.71 ERA) has a win, a loss and a no-decision his first three starts of the young campaign. The veteran hurler is off Thursday’s no-decision against San Diego after yielding two runs on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts over six innings.

    –The Mets eventually triumphed as a $1.32 road underdog, 7-2, while the combined nine runs went ‘over’ the 7 1/2-run closing total. The ‘over’ has occurred in all three of his starts.

    –The righty beat the Giants last year as a $1.24 road ‘chalk,’ 1-0, tossing eight scoreless innings on two hits with two walks and six strikeouts. The lone run never seriously threatened the nine-run closing total.

    –San Francisco pitcher Jamey Wright (2-0, 2.91 ERA) received a no-decision for Thursday’s 6 2/3-inning effort versus Arizona. The 31-year-old surrendered two runs on four hits (one home run) with five walks and two strikeouts.

    –The Giants triumphed as a road ‘pick,’ 9-7, while the combined 16 runs toppled the 10-run closing total.

    –Wright fell to the Mets last year as a member of the Colorado Rockies as a $1.22 home underdog, 9-3. The right-hander was reached for nine runs on 11 hits (three home runs) with two walks and three strikeouts over just four innings. The combined 12 runs landed directly on the closing total.

    **Red Sox (Schilling) at Indians (Westbrook)**

    –LVSC opened Boston as a $1.45 road ‘chalk’ over Cleveland, with the total listed at nine ‘under’ (minus $1.25). This American League matchup is scheduled to start at 7:05 p.m. ET.

    –Boston ace Curt Schilling (4-0, 1.61 ERA) continued his early season dominance compliments of Wednesday’s victory over Tampa Bay as a decided $3.20 home favorite, 9-1. The hard-throwing right-hander allowed the lone run on six hits with a walk and seven strikeouts over six innings.

    –The combined 10 runs slithered ‘over’ the nine-run closing total, ending back-to-back ‘under’ outings.

    –Schilling has not started the Indians the previous few seasons.

    –Cleveland righty Jake Westbrook (2-2, 5.92 ERA) toes the rubber mired in a personal two-game losing skid after Wednesday’s setback to Baltimore as a $1.26 road ‘chalk,’ 18-9. The Georgia native survived just 4 2/3 innings, allowing nine runs (eight earned) on 12 hits with no walks or strikeouts.

    –The combined 27 runs soared ‘over’ the 9 1/2-run closing total, ending back-to-back ‘under’ outings for the veteran.

    –Westbrook has not started against the Red Sox the last couple years.

    **White Sox (Vazquez) at Mariners (Pineiro)**

    –LVSC has Chicago as a $1.20 road favorite over Seattle, with the total listed at 8 ˝ ‘under’ (minus $1.20). This contest is scheduled to begin at 10:05 p.m. ET.

    –Chicago pitcher Javier Vazquez (1-1, 3.86 ERA) recorded his first victory of the season Wednesday by beating Kansas City as a huge $2.70 home ‘chalk,’ 4-0. The Puerto Rico native tossed eight scoreless innings on two hits with a walk and seven strikeouts.

    –The four runs failed to eclipse the 9 1/2-run closing total, helping the ‘under’ improve to 2-1 when he’s on the hill.

    –Vazquez pitched for the Arizona Diamondbacks last year, and has not started against the Mariners the past few years.

    –Seattle’s Joel Pineiro (2-1, 3.96 ERA) gets the starting assignment fresh off Thursday’s no-decision against Texas. The veteran right-hander was reached for three runs on four hits (one home run) with four walks and three strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings.

    –The Mariners eventually dropped that affair as a $1.24 home favorite, 4-3, while the combined seven runs went ‘under’ the 8 1/2-run closing total. The ‘under’ has occurred his last two starts.

    –Pineiro was 1-2 versus Chicago last year in three starts, allowing a combined 10 runs on 22 hits (five home runs) with seven walks and 12 strikeouts over 18 innings. The Mariners triumphed as a $1.75 road underdog, 4-2, while falling as a road ‘pick,’ 6-4, and as a $1.12 home ‘dog, 4-3. The ‘under’ was 2-1 during those three games.

    –Penny, a seven-year veteran, has not started against the Astros the previous few years.
    Guess it depends on the definition of 'the previous few years.' Penny has two starts against the Astros since 2003, both coming in Houston.

Penny vs. Linebrink, with Penny starting strong before yielding to some dink singles, an error by Lowell and Penny's own wild pitch. Houston actually made a pretty bad decision not long after this game when the tried to run Linebrink through waivers and the Padres nabbed him.
