    EP36's Double Header

Thought long & hard about how best to manage my money in baseball and this is how I'm doing it. The double header. Two picks MAX per day. That keeps me from being an action junkie with too many plays. In addition to the two plays per day, I will make periodic SERIES plays on my home team, the Houston Astros, when the situation warrants. Let's get that paper!

    MARCH 31st

    REDS -112
Gallardo vs. Volquez here. Both pitchers have below average numbers against the opposition with ERAs in the 5s, but Gallardo especially has been hit hard. Several Reds regulars have gotten to him regularly. Bruce is 4 for 8. Phillps 7 for 17. Rolen 7 for 11. Votto 6 for 16. Gallardo lost all three starts to MIL last season. The Reds won 7 of 8 against the Brewers at home in 2010 and were 11-3 against them overall.

    PADRES-CARDINALS OVER 7 [-125]
Stauffer vs. Carpenter. Carpenter likely will shut down the Padres lineup fairly well, but Stauffer has given up 4 ER in each of his last two starts vs. STL. OVERs have hit in 11 of 18 starts for Carpenter over the past two season with totals set at 7.

Maybe a good omen for the season, Reds score four in the 9th and win it with the walk off dinger from Hernandez!

Living good today. Padres HR in the 9th with two out guarantees no worse than a push in what looked like a sure fire loss on the total.

Average I'd say. Probably finished minus a few units, but I really did not have a good game plan going into the season so I don't think I made a lot of smart wagers. I've really worked on making less plays in all my sports paying good dividends so far. Padres just cashed this sucker on the over, unbelievable!

    APRIL 1st
    INDIANS -104
Buehrle vs. Carmona. Buerhle is solid in opening day starts at 3-1 with a 3.37 ERA. Carmona is being entrusted with the #1 role in Cleveland and this is a good team for him to go against. CLE is 8-0 vs. the White Sox in Carmona's last eight starts against them, including three wins in 2010. He has good #s vs. most of the ChiSox regulars outside of Konerko who has taken him deep twice. Chicago was 5-1 in Buehrle's starts vs. CLE last year.

    TWINS-BLUE JAYS OVER 8.5 [-105]
Pavano vs. Romero. This series seems to find runs often. Last season, eight of the nine meetings saw at least nine runs. Dating back to 2009, five of those eight meetings saw the same result. Pavano has a 5.91 lifetime ERA against Toronto & is 2-4 with a 7.20 ERA at Rogers Centre. Romero has good #s vs. MIN, 2-0 in three starts with a 2.78 ERA. Some of the Twins hitters do have success against him though, including Span, Kubel, Morneau & Delmon Young who all have multiple hits off him.

Wow! You get around.... Was just in your soccer post. Didn't know you played bases as well. We had the same plays yesterday(I had the over(8) in the Cincy game as well). Really like the concept of your "Dbl Header" wagering system as I fall prey to "too much action" at times. Its frustrating ending up in the red at days end after starting with a few really good wagers. Anyway..... Nice Work, Good write up, & I'm tailing both plays. Break a Leg to the both of us!!!

Not even gonna worry about the rest of this ChiSox-Tribe game. Carmona got drilled and they're not coming back from this deficit. Was due for this after yesterday's fortune. At least Quentin is killing it for my Fantasy team!

    RED SOX-RANGERS OVER 9.5 [+100]
Lackey vs. Lewis. Lackey has poor career numbers vs. TEX with a 5.12 ERA. It's almost a full run higher at Rangers Ballpark. Lewis overachieved last year, but does have decent numbers against Boston. Still, in two of his three starts vs. the Sox in 2010 - the total ended in double digits. Chalk that up to a leaky bullpen and Lewis not being efficient with his pitches. If he only goes 5 IP and some change, Boston could tee off on the Rangers pen to help out here.

    ORIOLES +148
Britton vs. Davis. Britton was the O's best pitcher this Spring and now gets his opportunity with the injury to Matusz. Not so sure the O's aren't better than the Rays any way ... but no Longoria either for a struggling offense. Davis pitched decently vs. BAL in three starts last year, but the Rays lost 2 of those 3. Gimme plus money.

ANGELS TEAM TOTAL OVER 3.5 [-120]
The Angels are off to a slow start too, but they are hitting at a .298 clip and have scored at least four runs in three of their four games. Niemann goes for the Rays, he's 1-2 with 9.38 ERA vs. LAA. Hunter 4 for 7 and Kendrick 5 for 8, have hit him especially well. LA has pounded righties in general this season at .320.

    ROYALS +105
Hochevar vs. Floyd here. Hocehvar has solid numbers vs. CHI at 3-3 with a 3.65 ERA in 8 career appearances, 7 of those starts. Of the ChiSox regulars, only Alexei Ramirez [6/13] and Beckham [4/11] have done much off of him. Floyd has been a terrible road pitcher for Chicago. Although they were 2-2 in his starts vs. KC in 2010, Floyd is 3-7 against them in his career. At Kauffman Stadium, he's 1-4 with a 6.62 ERA in four starts. Several KC regulars have good success vs. Floyd. Aviles is 6/21, Cabrera 3/9, Francoeur 4/6, Butler 7/27 with 5 RBI & Gordon 4/12.

    ANGELS -103
Haren vs. Hellickson. I realize Hellickson is the future in Tampa and highly thought of, but it is difficult to back a Rays offense that is severely lacking in run production right now. Factor in that Haren has good numbers vs. TB at 5-2 in nine career starts with a 2.74 ERA that included two wins last season. Tampa is hitting just .130 against righties and until they find some consistent offense, even with a stud like Hellickson on the mound - the pressure is on their pitchers to hold the opposition down. That asks a lot of a rookie against a steady vet in Haren.

    DIAMONDBACKS-CUBS OVER 8.5 [+100]
Galarraga vs. Dempster. Galarraga had a horrible Spring on the heels of a poor finish to 2010. Dempster was pounded in his season debut for 6 ER. Dempster has had a rough time at Wrigley in the last year with an ERA near 5.00. Cubs have been consistent scoring with four runs or better in four straight and at least three in all games. D-Backs have been hit or miss with two games of five or more and two games of just one run. This has been an OVERs series recently with eight of the last nine going that way. Wind supposed to be blowing out around 8 mph. Little rain early, but the game should be okay to go maybe with a small delay.

Been messing up the dates. Today is April 7th.

    APRIL 7th
    BLUE JAYS -120
Cahill vs. Romero here. Cahill has poor #s vs. TOR lifetime at 0-2 in three starts with an 8.02 ERA. They pounded him for 6 ER in his lone start vs. TOR in 2010. Cahill was wild but somewhat effective in his opener, lasting just 4.1 IP in his first start with 8 Ks and 4 BBs. Romero is 3-0 lifetime vs. OAK with a 2.25 ERA. The Blue Jays are 7-2 vs. Oakland at home over the past two seasons. Big difference maker could be the bullpen again as the A's pen has been horrid with a 6.35 ERA while the Jays pen has been stellar with a 1.00 ERA. If Toronto can make Cahill work and get him out of the game early, they could feast late.

    RED SOX-INDIANS OVER 8.5 [+101]
Lester vs. Carmona. Lester has poor #s at Progressive Field with a 6.85 ERA in four career starts. Orlando Cabrera has solid #s [5/16] against the lefty. Most of the Tribe's lineup today has scored a few hits off Lester. Carmona was pounded in his opener vs. Chicago. He's been steady against Boston, but some of the Sox have hit him well. Crawford is 4/14, Ortiz is 5/13 & Scutaro is 11/25. Both pens were used heavily last night, so they need the starters to eat innings today. Boston's pen has been brutal with a 7.98 ERA. Cleveland has raked lefties at .314 so far, so they could get to Lester.

METS TEAM TOTAL OVER 4 [+100]
The Mets draw Jordan Zimmermann today. Zimmermann has a 3.54 lifetime ERA vs. NYM in four starts. Zimmermann was solid in his 1st start, allowing three runs in 6 IP before the Nats bullpen blew up against Atlanta. The Mets have sandwiched two poor offensive performances around a solid set where they scored six or more runs in four straight. Struggling to put up runs against Josh Johnson & Roy Halladay though is nothing to be ashamed of. Zimmermann can be a dominant force, but also struggles with consistency. The Nats bullpen has been taxed bit early this season with extra work due to poor starting performances ... if NY can be patient and force Zimmermann out after 5-6 ... they'll get a crack at more runs.
