Josef Newgarden is the latest Indy 500 champion after entering the race among the favorites at our best sports betting sites.

It was another white-knuckle ride for Josef Newgarden in the Indy 500, and another victory.

Newgarden dueled with many throughout an exhilarating race, but his most notable battle came against Pato O'Ward over the final laps. The Mexican passed Newgarden and seemed to be well-positioned to finally get his Indy 500 win when he raced ahead for the lead on the final lap. But then the defending champion zipped past O'Ward again two turns later.

Newgarden joins a select group while becoming just the sixth driver to win the Indy 500 in consecutive years. He's also the first to accomplish the feat since Helio Castroneves way back in 2001-02.

The Penske driver entered as the second-favorite by the odds at our best sportsbooks, and only narrowly behind Scott McLaughlin. Here's a look at the final odds for the 2024 race, along with some history of the event and betting guidance (odds via our best sports betting apps).

Indy 500 FAQs

When is the 2025 Indy 500?

The 2025 Indy 500 will take place on May 25.

Where is the Indy 500?

The race is held annually at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Ind.

Who won the 2024 Indy 500?

Josef Newgarden won the 2024 running of the Indy 500 after overtaking Pato O'Ward on the final lap, becoming the fourth driver in the history of the race to win on a last-lap pass. Newgarden also took the Indy 500 for the second straight year. He's the sixth driver to earn back-to-back victories, and the first since Helio Castroneves in 2001-02.

Why does the Indy 500 winner drink milk?

The tradition started when Louis Meyer requested a glass of buttermilk after winning his second Indy 500 race in 1933. He did so again following his third win in 1936, and he was photographed swigging from the bottle of milk while holding up three fingers to signify the third triumph.

A local dairy company - unaware Meyer was drinking buttermilk - offered a bottle of milk to the winners of future races. Milk has been presented each year since then, apart from 1947 to 1955.
