Romania Serves Notice to Sports Bettors: Comply or be Fined
The Romanian National Office for Gambling has warned players of steep fines for playing with unlicensed online betting sites.
In an article released today by a local Romanian newspaper, a plan was publicized to fine players between $1,250 and $2,500 depending the offense for betting with bookmakers on the Romanian black list.
Sportsbook Review reported on October 16 that A+ rated bookie Bet365 lost their Romanian gaming license. In this same publication, a 30 day notice was given to players to withdraw their funds before local Internet Service Providers (ISPs) blocked access to unlicensed online sportsbooks.
It remains to be seen how Romania intends to stop players from using VPNs to circumvent the ISP blockage, though sportsbooks in regulated markets that keep up with international guidelines are likely to oblige Romania's request not to serve players. Bet365 has since removed Romania from its country dropdown list on the registration form.

The Romanian black list features 147 online sportsbooks and casinos. Presently, 14 online sportsbooks and casinos are licensed by the Romanian National Office for Gambling, most notably Betfair International PLC, 888 Romania Limited, and Unibet (Germany) Limited.
