Super Bowl not so super for online sportsbooks, Vegas

The Green Bay Packers defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25, in Super Bowl XLV. The game took place at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, and was reported to have eclipsed the highest ever viewing record, averaging more than 111 million viewers.

While the game was kind to football enthusiasts and cheeseheads alike, the betting public made out nicely with several popular combination bets winning. An ESPN report stated Las Vegas sportsbooks cleared under one million dollars in profit on the game. The article goes on to say that the figure was confirmed by Nevada Gaming Control board regulators. | Super Bowl wrapup

Offshore sportsbooks meanwhile tell SBR that players capped off nice runs by backing the Green Bay Packers; covering with the Packers as pointspread favorites in each game leading up to the Super Bowl. One wager type that was doubly successful for all players was the "six point teaser", which cashed for players that backed either Pittsburgh or Green Bay along with the over.

What is a teaser?
A teaser is an exotic wager that consists of two or more football or basketball teams which must cover the pointspread. The bettor receives six points that he can use in his favor, for example, an underdog of 3 points would have its game-line changed to 9, while a favorite of 7.5 points would be adjusted to 1.5. Both legs would have to cover their teased spreads, in return the player would win his wager. Such wagers typically are priced at -110. SportsbookReview lists a sportsbook football teasers guide to help players make a more informed decision on which sportsbook offers more bang for the buck. Only sportsbooks rated B or higher are featured on the breakdown.

ESPN:

Sports books in Nevada hung on to win just over $724,000 from Super Bowl bets despite heavy gambling on the Green Bay Packers and lots of scoring, Nevada gambling regulators said Tuesday. The Nevada Gaming Control Board said $87.5 million were wagered on the NFL's championship game in 183 sports books across the state. Of those bets, casinos kept less than 1 percent.

"I can't say I've got a cheese head in my office right now," said Jay Kornegay, executive director of the race and sports book at the Las Vegas Hilton.
