NHL Picks Of The Day: Come Out Ahead With These Top Teams

Thursday, April 21, 2016 2:50 PM GMT

Tonight in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, we have our second look at elimination games with both Tampa Bay and St. Louis going for the kill shot. Preview & NHL pick here!

Both are favored to do so, but given the fact underdogs are 15-15 (+2.94 units) so far in the postseason, at least one of these favorites losing should not shock anyone. (For more on the Blues and Blackhawks, we have longer game write-up here at sportsbookreview.com)

The other two contests bring a great deal of intrigue, with the New York Rangers not wanting to go to Pittsburgh down 3-1, while Pacific Division winner Anaheim tries desperately to square series with Nashville and make visitor 4-0 in their conflict.

I said yesterday about my NHL picks, the only way Washington loses is if they don't show, well guess who did not come to play for two periods. This leaves me 15-12-1, but down in units, but we still have a ways to go against the NHL odds.

Rangers Change Tactics, Even Series with Pittsburgh
After their Game 3 defeat to Pittsburgh 3-1, which wiped away their home ice edge, even the New York players admitted the strategy they are using is not working. The Rangers have tried to set up offense in the neutral zone before advancing into their own end, which is something the Penguins also know and they have put in a trap defense to keep New York right at that point, making this offense not easy to deploy.

New York need dump the puck into their zone from neutral ice, have a opposite side winger or two players go chase it and make Pittsburgh defenders have to fight to gain control of the sphere. They really need to turn up the heat on whoever is playing goal for the Pens and take some of the pressure off their goalie Henrik Lundqvist.

Intertops has the Blueshirts as +100 home underdogs, but given the fact they are 7-0 in home games off a home loss this season, would not recommend betting against them.

Special Teams Send Tampa Bay to Next Round
After being shutout in Game 3 at Detroit, Tampa Bay coaches and players know being 1 for 14 on the power play could end up sending them to a series loss without improvement. On Monday, they made adjustments during practice and it paid off perfectly, scoring all three goals with a man advantage in clutch 3-2 triumph in the Motor City. The Lightning are a -155 home favorite to knock the Red Wings out of the playoffs for a second straight year at Amalie Arena.

Detroit will now have to make alterations to contain Tampa Bay's power play and also try and breathe life into their own. The Red Wings are an abysmal 1 for 21 with a man advantage in the series and have found no solution for solving goalie Ben Bishop and his Lightning teammates. Including the last two games of the regular season, Detroit has scored exactly two goals in each of last six contests and have a 1-5 record to show for it.

With Tampa Bay 10-2 at home recently versus the Wings and outscoring them 39-20, this outcome seems obvious.

Stanley Cup Prop Possibilities

Tampa Bay 3-Way Line - minus 120
Because of what I mentioned above about the Lightning home dominance of Detroit, have no problem thinking Tampa Bay will avoid having to go to overtime to beat the Red Wings. Lower odds also help reduce risk.

St. Louis Over/Under 30.5 Shots
Only half the time in this series have the Blues beaten the shot total listed and in one of those they reached 31. For my money, Game 5 will be more conservative from both teams, especially St. Louis, not wanting to give Chicago an inkling of opportunity to believe they can win this contest. The Blues take the series and do with fewer than 30 shots on goal. Play Under.
