NHL Picks: New York Islanders vs. New York Rangers

New York Islanders celebrating

Thursday, October 13, 2016 9:02 PM GMT

Despite last season's success, the Islanders have always felt like New York second team. I'll tell you why the second team will go into MSG tonight and steal a victory, make them your hockey pick.

2016-2017 Selection Record: 0-1 0% -1.00 unit

The New York Islanders dismissed the Atlantic Division Champion Florida Panthers to advance to the second round of last year's playoffs while the New York Rangers were bounced out in the first round by the Pittsburgh Penguins. From that, you would think that the Islanders would have knocked the apple shaped chip from their shoulders but this is New York and a few things will always be constant, the Yankees will always be bigger than the Mets, the Giants will always take precedent over the Jets, and the Rangers will own the majority of hearts over the Islanders.

From a betting perspective this gives us the knowledge that the Islanders will always be up for the rivalry and as a +125 underdog (at 5Dimes, where you can get a 50% Free Play Bonus) they are getting my money tonight but we are just laying a unit. Remember the season is a marathon so there isn't any need to go larger until I see better spots. I would wait as long as you can to play this game because the public and 'wise guys' are all over the Rangers so the potential to get better hockey odds than +125 is great.

The Islanders have won four straight at Madison Square Garden and four straight overall over the Rangers and although we know it's the first game of the season sometimes a confidence develops with certain teams or buildings. To give trend players, even more fodder, the road team in the series has won 13 of the last 17 meetings. Lets also not forget the MSG wasn't exactly a friend to the Rangers at the end of last season where they dropped 5 of their last 7 games.

If the Islanders needed any extra motivation let's not forget that Jimmy Vesey flirted with them as a potential home only decide on the Rangers.

You won't see much of a change with the Islanders forward group except for bringing in Andrew Ladd and Jason Chimera who will make them younger and faster. If developed properly the young forward depth could be one of the best in the league to play alongside All-Star John Tavares.

The Islanders have the advantage on the penalty kill and at this time an edge in scoring until we know if we're going to get bounce back years from Rick Nash or Chris Kreider.

I can't back a team as my NHL pick that I know is not good defensively outside of Ryan McDonough. Marc Staal, Dan Girardi, and Kevin Klein grew weaker as the season progressed which was exploited by the Penguins.

This has all the makings of a solid dog win and cash in your pocket.
