Carolina Hurricanes Players

The Carolina Hurricanes aren't a very good team but are playing better of late and worth a look in Tuesday's NHL action when they visit Eastern Conference foe Toronto. The Leafs are solid favorites on NHL odds but not where we are leaning.

2016-17 NHL Picks Record: 22-17 (+12.62 units)

Before deIf you watch the "Puckheads" video on this website, I promised to do a write-up on the Florida Panthers-Philadelphia Flyers matchup Tuesday. Like most days, if you give the NHL odds numbers enough time to settle down from their open, you'll generally find better options. So we're going to focus on the Carolina Hurricanes as the travel north or the border to take on the Toronto Maple Leafs.

First, let's look at the current betting trends and see if we can equate that into some lower-level NHL predictions tonight.

Home teams, especially home favorites, continue to cash tickets at a regular rate. NHL betting isn't complicated, but when you add the moneylines it because a game of money management rather than wins and losses. Favorites are now 169-83, cashing at a 60.57% clip, while home favorites have been even stronger cashing at 65.20% 133-53). So are there any teams Tuesday that could fall into a potential wager category but not destroy our bankroll with a loss? Ironically, the Maple Leafs would fall into this category and it's ironic because we're betting against that trend tonight -- from just a trend standpoint playing a -135 home favorite isn't the worse position to be in.

I would recommend being on the Boston Bruins or the Florida Panthers as home favorites. Both teams are -135 on NHL picks, but get it now as I suspect the Bruins line will increase.

Total players who have been on the 'under' after the first month of the season have enjoyed a huge amount of success as over 55% of all games this season has been 'under' the total. Three of tonight's five games are shaded to the 'over,' which means you have plenty of plus money opportunity if you a trend bettor.

That's your update, now on to our play. This is personal. Hurricanes coach Bill Peters learned his craft under Leafs coach Mike Babcock in Detroit. When the two meet, it's usually is a tight checking affair with few quality scoring chances. In three meetings last season, two of the meetings went to overtime with Toronto winning the other 3-1.

Since Carolina started 3-6-4, it has rattled off four straight wins that have included quality victories vs. Washington, San Jose and Montreal. Much has been made about the Maple Leafs' young players, but I suspect Carolina will be eager to show off its own stars as three of the Hurricanes' top four scorers are under 23. Carolina has beaten Toronto 10 of their last 14 meetings.
