I normally don't like to back too many teams in desperation mode, because the reason they're in a state of desperation is they're not very good. In the case of the Dallas Stars I'm willing to overlook their current state because there is just too much talent to not believe they can put together a solid effort against a bad Detroit Red Wings club.

At .500, or at least according to the NHL's way of keeping track of records, the Stars aren't close to sniffing my list of the top teams in the league but despite their mediocrity they are reliable to get a reasonable amount of shots on goal per night.

Dallas is 13th in goals for percentage at 50.4%, 5 on 5. This means that the Stars are still better than most despite their struggles.

The problem comes when you factor in their penalty minutes per game, among the worst (11.18/gm, 6th). As a result, the Stars rank number one in goals allowed on the PK (32). If they win the special teams battle tonight they will easily take two points from this hockey game.

I foresee this is a good spot for the Stars and goaltender Antti Niemi to build on three solid recent performances, considering the Red Wings have dropped four of their last five games.

The net-minder issue in Dallas is interesting because either Niemi or Kari Lehtonen will be exposed to the Vegas Golden Knights at season's end. The last time we saw Lehtonen he was throwing his stick down the tunnel after getting pulled against the Kings. I'm not one to anticipate trouble but in the NHL prediction business that's part of what clients pay you to do.

I know this, there has been a two-year battle between Niemi and Lehtonen to grab the number one spot in the crease. I'm sure Niemi isn't wishing for poor Lehtonen performance's but human nature takes over, meaning, he knows with a solid effort against the Wings Niemi could force a little distance between the two.

Dallas has dealt with injuries for much of the season but tonight they'll meet their equal as Detroit will be without six main contributors to their line-up.

This is a great spot for the Stars to get a victory that they desperately need even at a higher price.
