BetOnline has unveiled an entertaining prop speculating on the whereabouts of Cowboys backup QB Tony Romo next season, with nine teams that could really use a guy like the 36-year-old former Pro Bowler. Let’s look at the possibilities.
Hey, Who Needs a Quarterback?
Bovada lists the Denver Broncos as the 5/2 NFL betting favorites to be the team that Tony Romo is playing for in Week 1 next season. But with the Broncos drafting Paxton Lynch (Memphis) last spring and having Trevor Siemian (Northwestern) now with some starts under his belt, some think that Denver isn't a candidate. That said, with a win-hungry football city and a former successful QB as the general manager in John Elway, Romo and the Broncos almost seem meant for each other with the Eastern Illinois University product reportedly wanting to play for a winner -- meaning the Houston Texans may be his choice for a perceived easy run (AFC South) to the playoffs.
The Wisconsin native may opt for the Chicago Bears, who likely will soon be cutting the cord on the mercurial and interception-prone Jay Cutler. Chicago has some decent WRs along with a possible $60 million in cap room, Cutler decision depending. However, the Bears aren't close to a playoff team.
“It's a fun wager to talk about but not anything I'd put money on,” said sports handicapper Ted Sevransky on SBR's SportsBIT on Wednesday, adding, “It's a negative expectation bet.”
Matt Youmans, co-host of The Las Vegas Sportsline, said “Romo is such a gamble,” on Wednesday with co-host Dave Cokin -- who said Arizona is a great fit -- thinking Dallas could only possibly get a fourth-round pick for Romo. Youmans also opined “... the Jets don't make sense,” and that makes sense as a kid from America's Dairyland who has played for Midwest teams in college and the NFL and probably won't want to head East for a team with no chance.
Time will tell, but the oddsmakers seem to have the top three favorites spot on with Denver, Houston and Chicago all logical and seemingly perfect fit city and team destinations with Romo obviously not wanting to stay as a backup behind Dak Prescott in Dallas even if that might be the best idea for his aging NFL body and mind.
