NFL Picks Of The Day: Point Spread Plays For Preseason Week 1 Saturday's Games

Dallas Cowboys

Yesterday was a great barometer for what's to come to the rest of this preseason as we look at the NFL games for Saturday. The starters will see limited action while the players looking to land a permanent backup spot take center stage. Let's see how this affects our NFL Preseason Picks of the Day For Saturday.

Indianapolis Colts vs Buffalo Bills

Defense Is Key With Rex Ryan
Ryan went right to the phone and drafted a defensive end, Shaq Lawson, formerly of the Clemson Tigers and also made 3 defensive picks in the first 3 rounds because that's the way that Rex Ryan was taught to win football. I expect Ryan to come out strong with a little fire in his belly as he hasn't lived up to expectations as a head coach and he's still grieving the passing of his father, Buddy Ryan.

Ryan is also a believer in starting quarterback, Tyrod Taylor and I don't think that a team can be elite with Taylor behind center. Fortunately for the Bills, Taylor will be splitting snaps with backup ,E.J. Manuel, and look for Manuel to try to make an impression in this pre-season game as he lost the starting job to Taylor.

You have two quarterbacks that can run and throw the football in Manuel and Taylor. Manuel did throw for slightly over 3000 yards passing last season and that will be a tall order this season. In this game, we could see a lot of different receivers as the Bills are a banged up team defensively with Lawson and star wideout, Sammy Watkins (1047 yards, 9 TD's ) has been dealing with a foot injury. I don't expect to see a lot of Watkins. Guys like tight end, Charles Clay, and Robert Woods could see some early game action.

Limited Snaps For McCoy
This could affect the game as a good ground game for Buffalo to win. Guys like Mike Gillislee (267 yards, 3 TD) should see a ton of time and we might see some Reggie Bush, who I thought was overrated as a collegiate and pro player.

No Hall Of Fame Game?
The Indianapolis Colts will be eager to get on the field with Buffalo after the Hall of Fame Game was canceled and I think that this can work to the Colts advantage as they were already prepared to play football.

The Colts didn't look for any skilled offensive players in the NFL Draft after they had a poor season last year. Filling voids were more important and the core group of Andrew Luck (1881 yard, 15 TD, 12 INT in 7 games), T. Y. Hilton (1124 yards 5 TD), and veteran running back, Frank Gore are still intact.

Luck is supposed to be the future of the NFL and I look for him to have a monster season. Luck will see a decent amount of snaps, but this game will come down to the backup players and respective defenses. This is where I think that Buffalo will have the advantage in a meaningless game. Look for the Bills to play like it's the regular season, especially on defense and win at home. I suggest the Bills spread with NFL odds of -2 -110 for your betting pick.

Dallas Cowboys vs Los Angeles Rams

No Respect For the Cowboys?

The star on the helmet of the Dallas Cowboys has always gotten respect, but not in this game by odds makers as Dallas is a 5 point underdog as opposed to 2-3 points underdog which has been status quo throughout the league in this 1st week of the NFL Pre-season.

Los Angeles will definitely be psyched up and ready to go along with their fans as football is back in L.A. The Rams will also be psyched to see 1st round, 1st pick of the NFL Draft, quarterback, Jared Goff, and see Goff take his talents to the professional level. Against a tough Cowboys defense, preseason or no preseason, it will be a tall order as the Cowboys are a very competitive football team historically.

Case Keenum will also see some action and he will be very competitive as he and Goff battle it out for the starting quarterback position. Keenum threw for 828 yards with 4 TD and 1 INT in 6 games and will ultimately lose that position barring injury.

Can Todd Gurley Go The Distance?

The Rams will also treat star running back, Todd Gurley, very carefully as he has the potential to be the best running back in the NFL. That said, Gurley always has the potential to "break one" and make an impression on the L.A. fans. Gurley could be a factor in limited action.

Ezekiel Elliot

The Dallas Cowboys will be expecting a lot from this young man as Tony Romo and Dez Bryant have battled injuries the past few years. Romo is also getting up there in years and he desperately needs someone to take the pressure off of his collar bone. Elliot is expected to be the answer.

Expect to see a lot Kellen Moore, who excelled at Boise State, but is a mere backup in the pros and running back Lance Dunbar will also be featured in this game.

In the end, the Rams want to make an immediate impression and with Todd Gurley in the backfield; even for just a limited amount of time, I like L.A. in this spot as my NFL pick.
