Chiefs vs. Bears: Weak Offensive Teams Make Second Half Under The Play Here

Kansas City Chiefs

We split a pair of NFL Picks in Week 2 of the NFL Preseason, but after a red-hot Week 1 we are heading right into Week 3 with more winning tickets on our minds.

Two Week 3 Preseason Coaches
John Fox and Andy Reid probably know each other pretty well from Fox's time in Denver, but for this week's preseason matchup, the sportsbooks are definitely leaning towards the Chiefs. Both coaches have very good preseason records in Week 3, because including their time with Denver and Philadelphia, combined with their new teams, these two head coaches are a combined 19-12 I Week 3 of the preseason. Reid has been the better of the two, going 11-6 SU in Week 3 of the preseason throughout his career in Philadelphia and Kansas City.

Now that we are here in Week 3 though, both coaches are going to want to win this game. Week 3 is not only the most important for teams who have won both of their previous preseason games, but for these two teams, it will equal one of them getting their first preseason win.

However, even with Fox likely sending his young offense out on the field for most, if not all of the first half, that doesn't necessarily mean the Bears will score on Kansas City's first string defense. Even at home, this is still the preseason and the Bears have a ton of question marks on offense heading into this season. Fox may very well work some magic into it, but without Matt Forte the running game is middling at best, while the passing game is at Jay Cutler's mercy, which could be a good, or very bad thing for Chicago.

Kansas City will likely mix up its run and pass plays some in Week 3, but they don't have much on the outside, which will ultimately lead to them running the ball more, especially in the second half. Consider this when making your NFL Picks this week.

The Sharp Pick
However, while it is normally a good play to bet the second half of games in the preseason, even in Week 3, this game is screaming for a first half over and a second half under. We won't half first half lines for another couple of days when it comes to this game and second half lines won't be out until halftime.

So, while we don't have NFL Odds for it yet, it's still likely going to be a very good play. Neither team's second-string offenses bring much to the table, and the Bears might not score much at all against Kansas City's first-string defense.

The other factor in all of this is that neither one of these teams had much success scoring in the second half already this preseason. Chicago has all of 11 second half points in two preseason games, while the Chiefs, who are favorites with -118 at Heritage, didn't score at all in the second half of Week 2, while only scoring three points in the second half of Week 1.

If we can get those kinds of performances from the backups in Week 3, the second half under is easily going to be the play here. Chicago and Kansas City play early on Saturday afternoon, so stay tuned and make sure to bet the under once halftime of that game rolls around.
