Calgary Stampeders

The division title race in both the East and West tightened up with last week’s results. Our Capper provides his CFL picks for week 6's action with two studied selections.

As far as last week's two-team CFL parlay pick, I made the right call on the OVER between Calgary and Winnipeg, but Ottawa's stunning loss to Saskatchewan ended my play. This week, I am going with a pair of key division showdowns as my top two picks based on the current betting lines at BetOnline.

British Columbia Lions at Calgary Stampeders
Pointspread: Calgary -4
Total Line: 49

Betting Preview
BC has been the surprise team in the West through the first five weeks of the season with a 3-1 start both straight-up and against the spread. The Lions opened things up in Week 1 with a stunning 20-18 victory over Calgary as 2.5-point home underdogs and they just beat Saskatchewan 40-27 as 1.5-point underdogs on the road. The most impressive thing about this team has been a defense that is holding opponents to just 18.5 points a game.

The Stampeders followed up a rare tie against Ottawa in Week 3 with last Thursday's 33-18 romp over Winnipeg as five-point road favorites. What has impressed me the most in their 2-1-1 start has been the play of quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell. He appears to be getting better with each passing week and in the win over the Blue Bombers he completed 70.7 percent of his 41 passing attempts for 310 yards and three touchdowns. This is a big reason why Calgary has averaged 31.6 points in its last three games.

Betting Trends
The Lions are 5-1 ATS in their last six road games and the total has gone OVER in seven of their last 10 division games. The Stampeders have covered ATS in six of their last seven home games and the total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in nine of their last 11 games following an SU win. Head-to-head in this West Division clash, Calgary has a 6-1 edge ATS in its last seven home games against BC and the total has gone OVER in five of those contests.

Betting Prediction
This matchup comes down to BC's shutdown defense against Calgary's scoring machine on offense. There is quite a bit of history between these two rivals and I am going with the Stampeders to successfully avenge that Week 1 loss while covering the four points at home.

Toronto Argonauts at Ottawa RedBlacks
Pointspread: Ottawa -9.5
Total Line: 49

Betting Preview
Toronto is starting to build up some momentum with three wins both SU and ATS in its last four games including a dominating 30-17 victory against Montreal as a four-point home favorite this past Monday night. The big question for this game is how well Logan Kilgore will be able fill the void at quarterback for the injured Ricky Ray. Ray was a big part of this team's recent success and Kilgore is relatively untested as a starter.

The RedBlacks will look to bounce back quickly from a stunning 30-29 loss to Saskatchewan on a last minute 53-yard field goal. They failed to cover as 6.5-point road favorites in that game. The good news is that quarterback Trevor Harris should be good to go after leaving that game early in the first quarter with a leg injury. Harris is a big reason for Ottawa's success this season with 1,499 passing yards and nine touchdown throws against just one interception.

Betting Trends
The Argonauts have gone 4-1 ATS in their last five games on the road and the total has stayed UNDER in their last four road games. The RedBlacks have gone a perfect 5-0 ATS in their last five division games and the total has gone OVER or ended as a PUSH in five of their last six home games.Ottawa drew first blood this season with a 30-20 victory as a slight one-point road favorite on July 13. The total stayed UNDER the 53-point closing CFL Odds line after going OVER in the previous three meetings.

Betting Prediction
With Harris apparently cleared to get the start, I am going with Ottawa to cover the nine and a half points at home. The RedBlacks were a different team when he went out of the game last week and I am looking for them to return to form against a Toronto team that still has some major question marks at the quarterback position.
