Miocic Crowned Heavyweight UFC Champion

Saturday, September 10, 2016 10:32 PM GMT

The UFC touches down in Cleveland, Ohio tonight, home of the defending heavyweight champ Stipe, Miocic. Let's review the UFC odds and isolate a few sharp betting props to fatten our wallet.

Overeem vs. Miocic - Total Rounds 1 ½
In this main event you have two big bangers going toe-to-toe and the UFC odds makers are making the total in this heavyweight title tilt 1 ½ rounds in what is a scheduled five-round brawl - er, match. It's not hard to understand why the total is so low as challenger Alistair Overeem has had only one bout travel beyond two rounds in his last five (unanimous decision win over Roy Nelson). In December of 2015 the Dutchman stunned Junior dos Santos at 4:43 of the second round, landing a wicked left hook to the chin of the former champion and swarming with a series of hammer fists until the referee mercifully stopped the contest. He followed that up in his last match with a jumping front kick that found its mark under the chin of Andre Arlovski followed immediately by the same bone-crushing left hook that felled dos Santos. Arlovski's night was over at 1:12 of the second-round.

Stipe Miocic took only 54 seconds of the opening round to TKO Arlovski in January and then won the title from Fabricio Werdum in 2:47 of the first-round, via knockout, to claim the heavyweight crown in May of this year. So here we have two big men who make their living knocking other big men out cold.

It would seem to make all the sense in the world to go under the posted total in our UFC picks here but we are going to be contrarians. Overeem understands that he is facing a world champ who is fighting as well as he has ever has in his career. Overeem and his camp also know this is not a "past his expiration date" Andre Arlovski nor is Miocic likely to gas like dos Santos uncharacteristically did in December. The champ is fighting in his hometown and will be there for the duration if need be. I suspect both men will be a bit cautious heading into this one with a world title on the line and the first round will be devoted to feeling each other out. The second round will see the beginning of the real action and I am quite certain someone will be on their back before the end of the fourth. That means this one will see the latter half of the second round and beyond which makes this an over play for us.

CM Punk vs. Mickey Gall
Much has been made of CM Punk's foray into the world of MMA and little is known of Mickey Gall other than his first-round impressive submission victory over Mike Jackson. But Mickey Gall is a BJJ practitioner and CM Punk is a showman. No match here as I see Gall winning this one the same way he won his last - with a tapout.

Urijah Faber vs. Jimmy Rivera
Jimmy Rivera has left a bevy of bodies in his wake since incurring the only loss of his career in just his second fight. Rivera is now 19-1 and steps up to the big leagues with a fight against a perennial championship contender in Urijah Faber. Sure Rivera looked sharp in his split decision win over a world class bantamweight in Pedro Munhoz but Faber is a different breed. He is a natural born pursuer and is relentless on the attack.

Of course Faber looked almost pedestrian against the sublime Dominick Cruz but that's because Cruz is the best in the world at 135 and Faber is getting, let's face it, old. The California Kid is no kid anymore and at age 37 he is much closer to the end than the beginning. But that doesn't mean the end is here yet because Faber still has plenty of fight left in him. I believe Faber wins this fight based on cunning and experience. I doubt either fighter scores a submission or knockout here which is why this one will go the distance.
