Horse Racing Betting Report - 2016 Breeders’ Cup Classic Futures

Four-year old Kentucky-bred colt Frosted during a race

There is a bit of a lull in the major graded stakes racing schedule this week making it the perfect time to take an early look at Bovada’s recently updated futures odds to win this year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic as part of two days of racing at Santa Anita Park on Nov. 4 and 5.

The Breeders' Cup is the biggest racing event of the season with 13 different million dollars plus Grade 1 events over two days at one of the top tracks in the nation. The highlight of this horse bettor's dream is the $6 million Classic which features the top three-year-old and up thoroughbreds in the world competing on the dirt track at Santa Anita over a distance of 1 ¼ miles.

Here is an early look at a few of my top betting picks to win this year's race based on the betting odds at Bovada.

California Chrome +175
At this point, it would be hard to argue against going chalk in this race given the current form of this champion five-year-old California-bred horse. Trained by Art Sherman, he his best known for his serious run at the 2014 Triple Crown with dominating victories in the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, but he has been putting some serious money in bettor's pockets this season with five victories in five major graded events.

He started his five-year-old campaign with a win in the Grade 2 San Pasqual Stakes at Santa Anita as a warm up for his first place finish in this year's Grade 1 World Cup in Dubai over a distance of 1 ¼ miles. More recently, he kept his winning streak alive with a first-place run in the Grade 1 Pacific Classic at Del Mar on Aug. 20 over Beholder and Dortmund at that same 1 ¼ mile distance.

Arrogate +300
The second-favorite on Bovada's futures list is a three-year-old Kentucky-bred colt that can only be described as a late bloomer. He has risen quickly to the top of the list despite sitting out this year's Triple Crown racing season. He did not even run a competitive race as a juvenile and heading into the month of May, his only race was a third-place finish in a Maiden Special Weight race at Los Alamitos.

Fame trainer Bob Baffert has brought this colt along at a snail's pace, but Arrogate appears more than ready to make a major splash on one of the biggest stages in this sport following last month's dominating 13 ½ lengths victory in the Grade 1 Travers Stakes at Saratoga over the likes of Exaggerator, Gun Runner, and American Freedom. He went off at 11/1 odds in that race.

Frosted +800
This four-year-old Kentucky-bred colt is trained by Kiaran McLaughlin and he recently placed third in the Grade 1 Woodward Stakes at Saratoga over a distance of 1 1/8 miles. This was his fifth race this season that has been highlighted by victories in the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap (Met Mile) at Belmont in early June and in the Grade 1 Whitney Handicap at Saratoga on Aug. 6 at that same 1 1/8 miles distance.

Going back over Frosted's career as a pedigree of Tabit with a progeny that can be traced back to Unbridled, he has finished in the money in 14 of 18 events including second in the 2015 Belmont Stakes. He did run in last year's Classic, but he faded to seventh against a very strong field.

2016 Breeders' Cup Classic Futures Odds for Other Notable Contenders
Moving down the futures list at Bovada you find Songbird at +1400 followed by the group of four horses at +1600 odds to win. That group includes 2016 Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist as well as Exaggerator, Dortmund, and Beholder. Further down the list at +2000 is American Freedom.
